There is no 16th century (or earlier) edition of KM, but for many countries, the KM numbering doesn't start at 1 at the start of the 17th century volume. This implies that earlier coins have been researched and catalogued by them, but haven't been published. (Presumably the likely take-up of what would be a large and complicated book doesn't justify doing so).

Is it possible that this information could be published in some other format (print on demand, DVD on demand etc)? What level of demand would there be? Has it been considered before and rejected as an idea?

I don't have many non-English coins from before 1601, but for those I do have, I have virtually no reference materials. I can't go buying the equivalent of Spink for every country where I might at some point possess a pre-17th-century coin!

Excellent point. Since the 17th century listings are still fairly incomplete, the earlier data may be rudimentary, though.

Solution a. Write an PM to our member tsm.

Solution b. Ask your questions here. I have books for earlier issues of the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, France and China and would be pleased to help. Other members are knowledgeable on the Indian subcontinent, Russia, the Ottoman empire etc. There are also good web resources. Together, we may not cover the world, but we get a long way.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

For one of my areas of interest, I have "Osterreichische Munzpragungen 1519-1938", (two volumes) and not much else.  I can't recommend it but it is better than nothing I guess.

I would like to have a copy of the 1995 reprint of "The Coinage of Medieval Austria 1156 - 1521 by Alfred Szego but haven't got it yet although it is cheap.  Only 122 pages or so.

Austrian literature for pre 1601 is scarce, at least I don't know of much.  I am sure there must be more written in the German language but I am unaware of it.

You can download Appel's Repertorium zur Münzkunde des Mittelalters und der neuern Zeit by Joseph Appel here (18.8Mb) The Austria chapter starts on page 934.

The background book is: Österreichische Münz- und Geldgeschichte: von den Anfängen bis 1918: Volumes 1-2, by Günther Probszt and Helmut Jungwirth. Not cheap. My own favourite: Auf Heller und Pfennig: Die faszinierende Geschichte des Geldes und der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung in Deutschland by Herbert Rittmann, ISBN 3870451173 (much cheaper)

Changed link to US version. It should work now
