A friend sent me a scanned page from the latest issue of Dogs magazine. This is a one-page article that deals with ... dogs on coins. :) The first piece is a Greek coin from Kyzikos (today in Northern Turkey), about 500 BC. Features a dog with a tunafish below.

The dog is the river god Crimisos; the two dots indicate the value.

Then we have a silver denar from the Roman Republic, 74 BC. The coin is about hunting (it depicts the goddess Diana on the other side), and you see a running dog above a spear.

And the last one, a modern gold coin from Hong Kong (1982) which refers to the Chinese calendar year of the dog.

The description says that in the past 30 years it has become popular to depict animals and "nature" on coins. Oh don't we know. ;D
