On e bay I recently saw a medal that seemed very similar in style to a known Ethiopian medal. There was little interest in the piece so I purchased it. Over the last few days, off and on, I have been comparing the "unknown medal to the known (Gill M38, page 123 in gills book). The known medal is 27 mm in diametre and according to Gill should have a loop attached.  You can see in the photographs the unknown is of larger diametre. I believe the two are so similar in style so as to suggest the unknown is possibly an Ethiopian struck piece.

Can any one offer their opinion?

Here is the reverse comparison

Interesting detail: the cross on top of the crown over the arms...

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Your referring to its absence on the unknown piece?   That' s one of the features that  suggests its from a different source... For me its the primative engraving style and similar shape of the letters on the Unknown piece with the The Ethiopian Medals reverse. The obverse, I am guessing, was taken from  French made dies.
