Major New Circulation Sets of the 21st Century

Here is a retrospective of the 21st century, showing which major NEW world circulation sets were produced each year.

I have included the year 2000, even though strictly speaking the 21st century did not begin until 2001.

The Euro Zone issued its first circulation euro coins.

16] East Caribbean States. 1c, 2c, 5c and dollar coin changed from polygonal in shape to round with an inner polygonal rim. The new portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (by Ian Rank Broadley) was also adopted.





17] Morocco.  New king's portrait, new series.





18] Nicaragua.  New style 5, 10 and 25 centavos.

1] Armenia. New design series, new denominations.





2] Serbia.  New design series. Serbia became part of the confederation of Serbia-Montenegro, and the Serbian dinar replaced the Yugoslav dinar.





3] Timor Leste regained its independence from Indonesia. It uses the US dollar but circulates its own coins.





4] Vietnam.   New design series.

1] Afghanistan.  Second afghani, with new designs.





2] Gibraltar.  New design series. The designs were re-used in 2005, but on different denominations.





3] India.   Unity in Diversity series: 1, 2, 5 and 10 rupees.





4] Iran.   Reduced size coins (50, 100, 250 rials), metal changes, new 500 rial denomination.





5] Iraq.   Occupation coinage.





6] Isle of Man.   New design series.





7] Rwanda.  New design series, dated 2003 but first issued in 2004.

1] Azerbaijan.  New design series and revaluation.





2] Central African States.   New design series.





3] Georgia.   New 50 tetri coin, plus new denominations of 1 and 2 lari.





4] Monaco.  New prince, new design.





5] Mozambique.  New design series and redenomination.





6] New Zealand.  10c, 20c and 50c: changed specifications and reduced size.





7] Nigeria.  New bimetallic 1 naira; new denomination of 2 naira (bimetal); plus reduced size 50 kobo.





8] Paraguay.  Same designs but metal change and size reduction for all coins, + new 1000 guaranies denomination.





9] Qatar.   Significant new look to state arms on all coins.





10] Sudan.  New design series, new currency: pound replaces dinar.





11] Vatican City.   New Pope.

              The 50P coin was also issued with the revived National Integration theme.





3] Slovenia joined the euro.

1] Fiji.  Three reduced size coins, plus one shape change (50 cents).





2] Iran.  Three new designs: 250 and 500 rials, plus new 1000 rial denomination.






3] Mauritania.  All coins reduced in size; metal change for 1 Ougiya; 20 Ougiya became bimetallic; new denomination of 50 Ougiya.





4] Mexico.  10, 20 and 50 centavos coins reduced in size; 20 and 50 ctvos: metal change to steel.





5] North Korea.  Currency reform and new design. The new currency completely depreciated within a few months.





6] Slovakia joined the euro.





7] Turkey.  New design series.





8] Turkmenistan.  New design series.

1] Estonia joined the euro.

3] India.  New design series: introduction of new rupee symbol.





4] Samoa.  New design series.





5] Morocco.  New design series: "Sustainable development and environmental protection".





6] Swaziland.  Coins reduced in size and/or weight; all now circular; most now minted in plated metal.

2012

1] Malaysia.  New design series: "Distinctively Malaysia". The coins are smaller and lighter than the previous series.





2] Malawi.  Smaller, lighter coins, and two new denominations: K5 - the purple heron; K10 - two elephants.





3] Solomon Islands

Smaller, lighter replacement coins. The 1, 2 and 5 cents have been demonetised. The 50c now carries the eagle design from the old 2c coin. The dollar is now round, not seven-sided, and the 2 dollar coin is a new denomination.





4] Colombia.  New design series: wildlife. Five new coins: three are shown below.





5] Tajikistan.  New design series.

2013

1] Zambia.  New design series, coinciding with the redenomination of the Zambian kwacha. Dated 2012 but released in 2013.





2] Fiji.  New design series, replacing the Queen's portrait with designs of native wildlife.





3] Angola.  A new design series, released 18th February 2013.





4] Singapore.  A new design series, released mid-2013.  Designer: Mr Fabian Lim of Singapore.
