3) It is strictly forbidden to be used on any coin intended to circulate throughout the Eurozone.
See, that is the part I am not so sure about. I know that the euro coin designs, including the ones that did not win the 1996/97 competition, all* have the face value as a word, e.g. "2 EURO" and not "2?" or "?2". Thus I assume that the competition rules said the euro sign should not be used. Fine. I also know that, due to more recent regulations, the face value is not to be repeated on the obverse (non-Latin versions excepted). Fine.

But I have not come across any EU document yet which says the euro sign may not be displayed in any way, not even as a symbolic representation of the currency. Don't want to appear stubborn ;) it's just that I have never seen such a regulation.

* well, the designs which I know, that is

I don't have much expertise on euros but this is an issue I haven't come across before and I'd like to understand. Can someone point me to the regulation that says you can't?

Christian,I can guess that Annovi Frizio from www.numismatico.de will be coming up with some designs.Has any of his designs ever been used?

Aidan.

chrisild

@Aidan: No, none of Frizio's designs has so far been used for an actual coin. One possible reason (and I'm only guessing here) is that most mints require designers to submit "classical" plaster models, ie. you need to be a sculptor to some extent. But he does have some very good design ideas.

@Geert: Well, in the EBT forum some member posted a picture that he had seen somewhere on the Internet ... a picture which looks like one of the designs you showed us here. (Try this link http://www.eurobilltrackerforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=10201&start=75 and scroll down until you see your design.) Then somebody else wrote that "Europa" was in Latin characters only, somebody wrote that some language was missing, and so on ...

Christian

Figleaf

Since this is clearly an original design, they might have had the decency to mention the name of the designer.

Johan BENDZ wrote
QuoteDear Mr Degryse,

All euro-area countries will issue a commemorative 2-euro coin with a common design at the beginning of 2009 to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the launch of EMU and of the introduction of the euro.
The design will be chosen by EU citizens and residents by voting among a number of already pre-selected designs on the specific web site set up for this purpose.

Voting will start on 31 January and finish on 22 February 2008.

Further information will be posted on the European Commission's website within the next few days at the following address:

http://ec.europa.eu/economy_finance/index_en.htm

Finally, I personally think the design you present at

is a very nice one, but we cannot take it into account for our competition, since only EU Mints have been invited to supply designs.

Kind regards,
