Konz: Coin worth 40,000 stolen at show
« on: February 14, 2011, 10:51:03 AM »
A gold coin worth more than 40,000 was stolen at a coin show in Konz (RP, DE) yesterday. Seems that around noon the dealer had to leave his booth for a short time, with the showcase left open. When he came back, the coin was "gone". http://www.volksfreund.de/nachrichten/region/konz/aktuell/Heute-in-der-Konzer-Zeitung-40-000-Euro-wertvolle-Goldmuenze-verschwindet-spurlos;art8100,2684523  According to the police report, the coin had a hare or rabbit design, and a gold content of more than 1 kilogram.

Edit: Could be a coin from this year (Chinese Year of the Rabbit) then. And no, I have no idea why the dealer left the showcase open, and apparently "unattended" too ...

Today, a kilogram of gold is worth roughly $48 000, or about 35 400. I can't imagine such pieces to go above melt value.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

The 40,000 amount was in the news article and in the police report. Whether the thief could actually get that much - not if it is a bullion piece (and it probably is one). I also wonder whether any insurance will cover this. Considering the circumstances ... I doubt it.
