Hello all,

I have been trying to find information out about these and after fairly extensive research I am still unsure of how many of each are known to exist or how much they may be worth. Does anyone have these details or an interest in these coins?

Thanks

Michael

A round 50p of 1994 would perhaps mean you have one of these...

that piece being a trial - so maybe the 2 Pound coin you refer to is a trial too (and not the normal 1994 Bank of England related coin)....

The top one here...

The other to look at is the 7-sided 1994 trial...

Do you have pieces that match exactly some of those in the images ?

If you want to sell them find a good coin dealer.

Thanks Mr Paul Baker

Hello!

Thank you for this information :) Yes I have both the round 50p in the first link and the two pound on top

I did buy a bimetallic two pound trial from the Royal Mint, but some of those were minted for sale, unusually. I have no idea in what amounts a standard trial piece is minted, given its limited usage. Your monometallic two pound trial was certainly never minted for sale.

Yes, from some research, the bimetallic £2 coins were released in sets of 4 also but the mono-metallic ones werent. I think I want to keep the 50p for my own collection but want to sell the £2 coin, ideally at a price that covers the cost I paid for both coins which from the links in previous posts may just about be possible

I am fairly certain neither the 50p or £2 I have were minted for sale too

And should therefore be pretty scarce as a result. Since you have had them authenticated by the Royal Mint, as you PM'd me, then they should hold their value and even hopefully increase it over time.

I have just listed the £2 on ebay if anyone wanted to see the photos, I know some of you did. I will work on getting the scans of the pamphlets as soon as I can

It would be interesting to see a photo of the edge of your round 50p piece. Is it milled? And roughly how thick is it in millimetres? I understand that the Royal Mint trialled it on the basis of its being a "half a pound" coin. The pound coin is of course thick and milled. I'm glad they ultimately went for a thin heptagon - the equilateral curve heptagon is one of the great inventions of modern numismatics.

A problem with the links is that unless you have paid them you see nothing...

I dont really think this belongs under unrealised designs

as the coins obvious where made

They are patterns, which were not minted for circulation but for test purposes only, so they legitimately come under unrealised designs. This makes them pre-coins and not actual coins.

Here is an image of the round 50 pence trial.

I am glad that the Royal Mint did not adopt it.

I much prefer the heptagonal shape.

It is perfect for commemoratives and has become very popular.
