Recently, on 27th Jan, 2011, India has issued a stamp on King Krishnadevaraya.

Alongwith the stamp, a Miniature Sheet has also been issued. The Miniature sheet shows three coins issued by Raja Krishnadevaraya.

I remember, another stamp was issued in 2006, on MP Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which showed some coins of Indore and Gwalior.

I am sure, there must be many more stamps, showing coins on them.

What I find interesting about the Maltese stamps aan009 scanned is that the stamps have the same value as the coins. That doesn't happen too often.

;D This stamp was published on Mainamati, one of the archiological site of Bangladesh. Two of the gold coins recovered from the site has been depicted on this particular stamp.

Abhay

Dear Islam,

I see that the value of the stamp is written as 4 Tanka at one place and 8 Tanka at another. Or is it that in Bangladesh, 4 is written like an eight in Bangla script?

Md. Shariful Islam

Abhay Daa... Actually in Bangla numerals 4 is just like English 8... Another thing is in Bangladesh unit of currency is Taka, which is derived from historic Tanka... Even in Westbengal of India Rupee is called Taka (if I am not making mistake)...

Islam

Abhay

Thanks for the clarification. So, this is a 4 Taka stamp.

Taka reminds me of something very interesting. In India, particularly in Rajasthan, there is a popular dish called Taka Paisa ki Sabzi. The name is given as Besan Pieces in the dish looks like Taka Paisa Coins.

Here is the link to the RECIPE for the Taka Paisa Dish.

Sounds like an American doughnut, just a little spicier (yummy) and not sweet. Interesting to know that Tanka is thought of as a holed coin. The closest that come to mind is the Chinese cash.

For more on tanka, see here.
