Hi guys

Chinese coin need help with
Identifying

Thankyou in advance

I was always curious about the purpose of the hole in these coins, if there is a purpose. I know some holed coins from other countries are holed so they can be carried around more easily...threaded on a string or something else.

Sorry I can't help you with this one.

This is a Jing De Yuan Bao of 1004-1007 AD, cast under the Emperor Zhen Zong (997-1022 AD) of the Northern Song Dynasty.

The hole allowed for these coins to be carried on a string - a full string was 1000 coins (so about 4 kg) though strings actually in use had slightly less as some coins were removed as mint, money-changer and banking fees.

The holes also allowed freshly cast coins to be put on a square rod and then have their outside edges filed down.
