Czechoslovakia 5 stotin 1920-ptn-.jpg

Czechoslovakia, 5 stotin pattern, 1920.

After the First World War, the new state of Czechoslovakia was created.

Originally the national currency was intended to consist of 100 stotin to the sokol.

Stotin means one hundredth. It is similar to the Slovene stotinov.

Interesting, <k>! Some of the designs look familiar of course, namely those which were later used on actual coins. :) But others are "new" (well, for me), and I had no idea about the unit name alternatives. Hmm, the Sokol (the word apparently means falcon) sports organizations did use the falcon on banners etc. – but it does not show up in these designs ...

Unofficially, many names were discussed - sokol, lev, káně, řepa, rašín, etc. I think only "frank" was considered officially. Here is a link to a paper with some images and short text in English at the end.

The Sokols were designed by Otakar Španiel, who also designed the first Koruna coins.

Here are few Frank/stotiny designs by Josef Šejnost.

The images are from the booklet, accompanying the souvenir set, minted by Kremnica mint in 2017.

The designs with the square-octagon combination I find quite appealing. In the first image, the man with the books ... is that supposed to be a specific person, or does the figure represent literature/education? Do we even know? ;)
