The reverse of the 10 guaraníes coin depicted a cow's head.

The obverse of the 50 guaraníes coin depicted Marshal José Félix Estigarribia Insaurralde (1888-1940).

He was a decorated Paraguayan war hero and was President of Paraguay for the Liberal party.


There were no 20 or 25 guaraníes coins.

The 5 and 50 guaraníes coins shown above were issued in 1975 only.

The 1 and 10 guaraníes coins shown above were issued in 1975 and 1976 only.


No coins were issued in 1977, but in 1978 a new series of coin was issued.

These were based on the designs of 1975 but included some amendments.

The obverse of the 1 guaraní coin still depicted the design of the soldier.

However, the year now appeared on the obverse.

The reverse of the the 1 guaraní coin depicted a soy plant.

The politically incorrect tobacco plant was now gone.


The design was FAO-themed and included the slogan in Spanish: 'Food for the world'.

FAO = Food and Agricultural Organization (of the United Nations).

From 1980 the year appeared on the obverse of the 50 guaraníes coin.

This new version was issued in 1980, two years after the lower denominations.

Unlike the other coins, the 50 guaraníes coin did not become FAO-themed.

The year was removed from the reverse, however.

The 5 guaraníes coin shown above was last issued in 1986.

The 1 guaraní coin and the 10 and 50 guaraníes coins shown above were last issued in 1988.
