The Colony of Curaçao and Dependencies was a Dutch colony from 1815 until 1828 and from 1845 until 1936. Between 1936 and 1948, the area was known as the Territory of Curaçao, and after 1948 as the Netherlands Antilles. Curaçao and Dependencies consisted of Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire. In 1845 the islands Sint Eustatius, Sint Maarten and Saba (formerly known as Sint Eustatius and dependencies) were added.

The first coins that circulated in Curaçao were chopped Spanish pieces of 8, which were countermarked with the denominations 3, 3.5 and 5 reals. These coins circulated from around 1800 until 1838. Both a five pointed rosette and a figure 3 mark were used to indicate the denomination of the pieces of 3 reals.
