Robert Elderton: FAO-themed designs

Sierra Leone, 2 leones, 1976.  F.A.O. Regional Conference for Africa 1976.

One of Mr Elderton's first designs appeared in 1976.

It was a FAO-themed coin to commemorate the Regional Conference for Africa 1976.

It was held in Freetown, Sierra Leone. 


F.A.O. stands for the Food And Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations.

Mr Elderton's beautiful design shows a rice farmer ploughing his field.

Mr Elderton designed several such scenes over the coming years.

Oman, ½ rial, 1978.  Lemon.


Robert Elderton modelled this FAO-themed design and the accompanying 1 rial design.

It is not known, however, whether the original designs were his.

Vanuatu, 50 vatu, 1981.  First anniversary of independence.


The New Hebrides was jointly ruled as a condominium by France and Britain.

It became independent in 1980 under the new name of Vanuatu.


Robert Elderton designed the collector coins that were issued the following year.

They celebrated the first anniversary of independence.


The large 50 vatu coin, seen above, shows men harvesting taro.

Vanuatu, 10,000 vatu, 1981.  Gold collector coin.



The reverse of the coin showed a coconut crab (Birgus latro).


Mr Elderton modelled the new country's emblem/

It appeared on the obverse of all Vanuatan coins.

Seychelles, 100 rupees, 1981.  World Food Day.


Meanwhile, the Seychelles issued a FAO-themed collector coin.

Mr Elderton's design showed a man removing the husks from coconuts.

Mauritius also produced a World Food Day commemorative in 1981.
