Leslie Durbin was born in Fulham, London, in 1913. He was the son of a railway clerk.  He studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. London, from 1926 to 1929. He was apprenticed to Omar Ramsden from 1929 to 1938. During the Second World War, King George VI was moved by the heroism of the Russians in defending their city against the besieging German army, and he commisioned a ceremonial sword to honour the people of Stalingrad. Mr Durbin helped to fashion this sword, which Churchill personally presented to Stalin in 1943.

Mr Durbin established a workshop in 1945, in partnership with Leonard Moss, to follow his career as a silversmith. He became one of the most admired silversmiths of the 20th century. He was made a Commander of the British Empire in 1976 for his contribution to the silver craft. He died in 2005.

It looks like Mr. Durbin had an amazing ability to make a busy and highly detailed design feel uncluttered.
