The coin was to be issued in 1981 for the 25th anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. It depicts the coat of arms of the Duke of Edinburgh. The coin was to be part of a set of 4 crowns that was going to be issued in cupro-nickel, silver, gold and platinum. The design was not used for reasons unknown.

In 1982 Pobjoy Mint intended to issue a series of 4 crown coins for the 21st birthday of HRH The Princess of Wales. 500,000 sets were to be issued and the coins would have been minted in cupro-nickel, silver, gold and platinum. Buckingham Palace refused to give permission for the issuance of the coins. The 21st birthday of the Princess of Wales was already going to be widely commemorated with stamps and it was not thought that it would be a good idea to expand that to coins. Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Princess Diana shared that view. Also see 2 further designs in the message below.

In 1983, Pobjoy Mint issued a series of 4 crown coins for the Isle of Man to commemorate 200 years of manned flight. They sent one extra design for approval, just in case one would be rejected. The leftover design, which depicts the Focke-Achgelis helicopter, can be seen above.

To commemorate the thirtieth commonwealth parliamentary conference in 1984, the Government of the Isle of Man proposed to issue a crown coin with the design that can be seen above. To commemorate the centenary of the motor car in 1985, the Isle of Man was planning to issue a series of 10 crown coins. The coins were to be issued in cupronickel, silver, gold and platinum. The Royal Mint, which got hold of the designs, remarked that it would be quite inappropriate for coins incorporating a form of advertising to be issued, particularly coins featuring Her Majesty's effigy. HM Treasury mentioned that The Queen will not accept any form of advertising and so that it is difficult to envisage that the proposal would get Royal Approval. This is likely why the coins weren't issue. Also see messages below for further designs of this series.

In 1985 Pobjoy Mint issued a series with the same theme and somewhat similar designs on 1 pa'anga coins for Tonga.
