The South African Mint had also been busy, trying to win the new Zimbabwe as a client:

But the Zimbabweans liked the Royal Mint's proposed designs.

Eventually the Zimbabweans agreed to do business with the Royal Mint. However, they wanted to use designs by a South African artist named Jeff Huntly.

Barry Stanton and Robert Elderton, artist and and sculptors at the Royal Mint, began work on modelling the designs they had been given.
