BORWICK'S BAKING POWDER on French 10 centimes
George Borwick and Sons.

Scott 22.202   BORWICK
George Borwick, of Morven, Torquay, was born in 1806. He founded the famous baking powder firm, George Borwick & Sons Ltd., in 1842. In 1880, Borwick had premises at 24 Chiswell Street, E.C., and 134 Upper Thames Street, E.C. He died in 1889, leaving £259,000. His son, Robert Hudson Borwick (1845-1936), a director of the firm, was knighted in 1916 and raised to the peerage in 1922. Borwicks later became a subsidiary of H. J. Green and Co. Ltd. of Brighton, and are now owned by the Pillsbury Co., of Minneapolis, U.S.A.

From a printing block in my collection.

Legislation of 1817-1818 banned the production and circulation of token coinage, but did nothing to prevent a merchant from stamping his company's name on regal copper coins and distributing them to advertise his business. Some employers even paid their workers with such counter-marked coins to promote their message. The situation was ultimately addressed by legislation in 1853, when it became illegal to deface the queen's coinage. Even that measure, however, failed to stop the practice, as businesses soon recognised there was a loophole - the legislation did not apply to foreign coins.

Spotted this countermarked 5 centimes on eBay scarcer on the smaller denomination.

Too expensive to buy.

Atelier is on the reverse under the arrows.  The other's an A.  The B you can see on the obverse is the beginning of Barre.
