The story of the galleon "De Liefde" (Charity) is interesting. It stranded on the Japanese coast. Survivors led by the ship's merchant Jan Joosten van Lodensteijn were taken up in the Tokugawa court.

There is a monument to the merchant and the ship he came on in Tokyo. I think it served as inspiration for the medal. There is an etch with "De Liefde" which was closely followed on the monument, but it looks unrealistic, with only five gunports and the foremast too far ahead.

We know that the ship was built and equipped by what was to become the admiralty of Rotterdam (the VOC bale mark on the monument is wrong, the VOC was established only in 1601, while "De Liefde" sailed from Rotterdam in 1598). Therefore, I think it may have looked more like the ships pictured in the Wikipedia "galleon" lemma.

Is this design good or bad? I can't make my mind up. Is it cleverly portraying the chaos of a storm?  Maybe the storm also has a symbolic meaning? According to this page (in Spanish), the coin shows a galleon in full sail. The galleon is a typically Spanish warship used since the early 16th century. Guess the stormy weather is not a symbol of what happened in 1588 but refers to what such a ship could "deal with".
