I questioned an expert on such things and he thinks that it was separately attached.

According to the author of Wine Antiques & Collectibles, he also runs that site, there's a chapter on Exonumia showing examples of wine tokens (33 images) 8) http://www.bullworks.net/books/wineantiques.htm

Fribourg/Freiburg: I find that it is "on the cultural border between German and French Switzerland" Source.

Could also be the one in BW, DE: Freiburg im Breisgau. The tokens in #32 and #41 both say "i.B." after all ...

Yes I think you're right Christian  8)

I've been trying to decipher the abbreviations on the champagne tokens:

BREVETE (patented) S.G.D.G. sans garantie du gouvernement (without guarantee of the state)

but SYSTEME C.B.F. DEPOSE I have got nowhere.  Well that's not quite true, I've been to plenty of interesting places.  Sidetracked again!

And incidentally I found mention of Bel Oiseau.  In Sydney & Brisbane!  Newspapers from 1879-1880 say "CHAMPAGNE-Bel Oiseau, in quarts and pints."  Class!  8)

I was intrigued by the English on the spinner. Found the restaurant in Koblenz, on Deinhardplatz 3. From the comments, it seems to be an upmarket wine bar, specialised in Alsatian and German white wines, rather than a midmarket restaurant and it's close to the Rhine. I guess that is an attractive combination for US servicemen stationed in Frankfurt/Main? The menu is in German and English.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Ah, Deinhard. The brand has its site here by the way, but that spinner would indeed be used at the restaurant. (Although ... it opened in 2007? Hmm.) Guess that, at the time when the piece was issued and used, there was indeed still American military in Frankfurt. Oh, and ... quite a few people around here will still know this Deinhard commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yeqAc7rJWI  Found it fun initially, despite the bad dubbing job, but as with many other things in advertising, after a while it gets on people's nerves. :)
