Alternative Coin Designs for Uganda, 1965-6

Here are some images of some alternative coin designs considered for Uganda, taken from Royal Mint documents in the National Archives, London. They date from 1965-6. There was some debate as to whether the obverse of the coins should show the President (Edward Mutesa), the Prime Minister (Milton Obote), or the coat of arms. It was considered by the Royal Mint that portraying the prime minister might cause resentment in the President - and vice versa.  Eventually Obote overthrew Mutesa, so resolving that question.

Uganda, 500 shillings, 2008.  Issued coin.

All the designs were by Cecil Thomas.

He also designed of the crowned effigy of Elizabeth II that appeared on old Commonwealth Coins.

His crested crane design resembles the one on the reverse of the modern 500 shillings coin.
