Title: Tehran bus token
Post by: Prosit on May 03, 2011, 02:02:11 AM
The little flower reminded me of some of the India coins that get posted here.
Does anyone know anything about this item?  It is 16.5mm

I am not an expert. But I think this is a token written in Parsian language. I read the following from the token.

Obverse: Sirkat Otto Ndya = East India Company
Reverse: Kha Twa 1912 = Line 1912

So, it is a token in the name of East India Company in the year of 1912. But I am expecting confirmation from Overlord and Oesho.

(N.B. This preliminary speculation is not correct in full and has been corrected by Africancoins in later part of this thread)

OK. Pure speculation, fed by Tanka's real knowledge. Looks like an Iranian bus token.

Thanks to Tanka's post, I figured it out. The text is Sherkat Atunadri, which is indeed the name of an Iranian bus company for Teheran and suburbs.

The Smith catalogue of transport tokens (the volume with tokens for trams, buses etc..) lists 20 of different tokens for Iran - with translations and some photographs.

The piece shown here rather seems to be a match for Smith-Iran-Tehran 750BI.

The obverse translation is given as...

SHERKAT-E OTO NADERI - meaning Oto Naderi Company

The reverse translation is given as...

Khatt-e 19 12 - meaning Lines 19, 12

Thanks Mr Paul Baker

Any indication of the real age in the catalog?

.....Khatt-e 19 12 - meaning Lines 19, 12

Thanks Mr Paul Baker

I found a few similars in auctions listings of dealer Steve Album....  there these tokens were said to be from the 1950s.

This could well be correct. I found no other opinions.

Thanks Mr Paul Baker

Dear Prosit, did  both sides of your token are embossed as they look on the pictures? I have one with the face with "khat 19 - 12 " which is intaglio (same diameter : 16,5mm)
Please could you confirm ? : 2 varieties or optical illusion  ???

I'm not ignoring you but I am unable to find where I put this token. However, I am 98% sure all the designs
were raised above the surface. In general I don't like incuse tokens so I am sure I would have noted that in the original
post.

Thank you :)
Here is my token.
I see that on my pictures, both faces appear to be rather with raised legends.... however the right one is well incuse !
These tokens seem to come from the same die : notice the small scratch on the digit "2" of "12" present on both.

If I was a betting person, I would bet a token exists without the scratch on the two.
