Title: Steam trains and railway stations
Post by: <k> on June 13, 2010, 03:29:31 AM
This topic is for coin designs showing steam trains and locomotives.

Please post modern trains in Modern trains and railway stations (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,23435.0.html).

Designs that show both steam trains and modern trains may be posted in either topic, or both.

Railway stations do not yet have their own topic. If the railway station was built in the days of steam trains, post the coin in this topic, otherwise post it in Modern trains and railway stations (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,23435.0.html).

My favorite railway/train coin is from Albania. It looks pretty much like the one depicted below. But that is "just" the 5 lekë Cu-Ni coin; the 50 lekë silver piece has a diameter of 65 mm ... and a hole where the tunnel begin or ends. :)

And here is a bronze souvenir medallion from Germany; 150 Jahre Deutsche Eisenbahn is 150 years German railroads. I suspect this is part of a series, showing different locomotives.

Hehe, "classic" also because Mexico does not have any passenger railway services, apart from tourist trains (Copper Canyon) and such ... :)

Nice one though!

No, I don't collect any of these collector coins. I always prefer to collect real coins. :)

However, sometimes I do get some of the euro collector coins which were issued for face value (Slovenian €3 or German €10 coins for example) and they are certainly not pseudo coins like Latvian coin shown above... ;)

What is nice about the piece, in my opinion, is that the obverse is basically a big train wheel. :) Fairly large images are here:

(obverse) http://www.bank.lv/images/stories/atteli/Nauda/jubilejas/Dzelcels_av.png
(reverse) http://www.bank.lv/images/stories/atteli/Nauda/jubilejas/Dzelcels_rev.png

The piece costs about 29 lats according to the media release (http://www.bank.lv/en/for-media/press-releases/on-issuing-a-new-collector-coin-railway-in-latvia/7911) of the central bank. Mintage is 5,000. Also, here is some background info (http://www.bank.lv/en/money/railway-in-latvia) about the issue:

"In 1860, when the stretch of the St. Petersburg–Warsaw railroad to Daugavpils (then Dvinsk) was completed, the first trains rolled over Latvian land and Robert Stephenson's factory produced the first steam engines for use on the Riga–Daugavpils line. The construction of the Riga–Daugavpils railway was initiated by the Riga Stock Exchange with the aim to develop port facilities and manufacturing in Riga. This railway was opened on 12 September 1861 and thus the foundation for further expansion of the rail network in Latvia was laid."

While the locomotive is in a circle of what was undoubtedly meant to be rivets.

Jeme Tien Yow and his Imperial Peking-Kalgan Railway.

100 Yuan 1987 125 Years of Zhan Tianyou

(The depiction of the train is a bit shaky, but the engineer's mustache is iconic ;D)

Quote
Jeme Tien Yow (Chinese: 詹天佑; pinyin: Zhān Tiānyňu; 26 April 1861 – 24 April 1919) was a distinguished Chinese railroad engineer. Educated in the United States of America, he was the chief engineer responsible for construction of the Imperial Peking-Kalgan Railway (Beijing to Zhangjiakou), the first railway constructed in China without foreign assistance. For his contributions to railroad engineering in China, Jeme is still known as the "Father of China's Railroad".
