Title: Qatar Fantasies
Post by: <k> on March 15, 2011, 02:58:15 PM
Here is an image of some Qatar patterns depicting wildife that ended up on sale in an auction. The image was found and sent to me a few years ago by a fellow forum member. The quality is not great, but it is the best we have.

I do not know the exact species portrayed, but from top left to top right: hawk, antelope/gazelle, dolphin; from bottom left to bottom right: some kind of cat (lynx, caracal?), turtle, scorpion.

This gold 5 Riyal piece is part of the above series showing animals.

According to the Weltmünzkatalog by Dr Gerhard Schön they were made by H.B. Sale Ltd. in Birmingham without the knowledge and authorization of the Central Bank of Qatar. So apparently these pieces are fantasies, not patterns. There exist 2 series with the same denominations and specifications. One depicts various animals and the other central bank buildings.
