In India issuing an Commemorative coin is generally the last and least important function of any event or Celebration and coin are issued when the yearly celebrations are already over and on many occasions the circulation coin is never released to public and some time coins have been issued, even where the function has been cancelled
INDIA IS GREAT SO ITS MINTS

Is there an error in the design? The date says 1857 to 2007 ... this actually matches the War of Independence date ...
The Kuka Movement started in 1860 and went till 1872 ... so the date should be 1872 to 2012 ?? Or is the Govt counting the Kuka Movement as part of the War of Independence movement??

Dear Friends

The seeds of the Kuka movement were sown in 1857. The the movement completed its 150 years in 2007. The coins on 150 Years of Kuka were being planned for a long time. However due to certain reasons (which I cant write here  :-X  :-X  :-X), the coins could not be released.

After wait of so many years, the auspicious moment is finally arriving for the Kuka coins.

GOI will release the commemorative coins on 150 years of Kuka movement today.  :D  :D  :D

Ashwin
They belong to a little known sect who are descended of the Kuka movement
They are different from other Sikhs.
They wear only white clothes in which they look very graceful
They keep their long beards open (please see the similarity between the portrait on coin and the attendees.
They tie their turbans in a style that is totally different than other Sikhs
I saw none of them with leather shoes. All of them were wearing long non-leather shoes

from a post on the SACG:

Dear Group,

The Government of India Released Commemorative Coins of Rs. 100/- and Rs. 5/- on 150 Years of Kuka Movement.

The Coins were released by Finance Minister Mr. P. Chidamran at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 05th Oct-2012.

We must Congrats and Acknowledge the Designer of the 150 Years of Kuka Movement-Commemorative Coins our Own Jeevandeep Jee.

When the Organiser approached him 2 Years Back, he not only did the designing for free but also spend his time and resources for the same.

Unfortunately our Governemnt India Mint Doesnot acknowledge Designer in their write ups of Commemorative Coins Unlike the British Royal Mint or Indian Stamps.

Three Cheers to Jeevandeep Jee for his Selfless Service to Numismatics.

Rgds
Tushar

Jeevandeep Singh is a member of the WoC too..........and a very nice and numismatically knowledgeable person.

Ludhiana’s Jeevandeep designs Kuka revolt coin

LUDHIANA: When Union finance minister P Chidambaram recently released a commemorative Rs 100 coin on 150 years of Kuka Movement, there were few who knew that the currency had been designed by city's own Jeevandeep Singh.

A resident of Chandigarh Road, Jeevandeep designed the coin in 2009 and handed it over to vice-chairman of Kuka Martyr Memorial Trust, Sant Surinder Singh Namdhari. Jeeavandeep said after a delay of three years, central government finally released this coin on October 5.

"In 2009, Sant Surinder Singh Namdhari asked me to design a coin dedicated to Kuka Movement. He also gave me literature on the subject, which I read carefully," he said.

The 35-year-old numismatist said he was asked to highlight various aspects of the movement and he took the help of Chandigarh-based artist Sikander Singh for making sketches. "It took us one month to make final design and after completing work, I handed it over to Sant Surinder Singh Namdhari... who gave it to the government," the proud Ludhianvi said.

Talking about the design, Namdhari said they wanted to highlight the contribution of Kuka Movement and Satguru Ram Singh against the British Empire.

"We came to know about Jeevandeep's numismatic skills and we gave him the responsibility. He did a commendable job," he added.

The VVIP set released in frame ... looks like there are 4 coins 2 of Rs 100 silver showing both the faces ... like wise for Rs 5.

To my knowledge this would be the first time a VVIP [or VIP] set with Silver coins has 2 coins of same denomination ...

On the other hand the VIP set looks like the standard stand type [smaller one] ...
So if the mint were to sell this over the counter wonder what the price for the VVIP would be ... it would definately be twice the price of a normal VIP set ...

The VVIP set is with 2 coins and is housed in a premium box, the VIP set is in a regular cardboard box. The 4 coin set housed in a frame seems to have been used for release function only, and was handed over to Satguru Jagjit Singh of the Namdhari sect, via his wife Mata Chand Kaur ji, who attended the function. Sanjay Kansal ji should be able to elaborate more on this.

Amit

it is quite possible that these are one mint issue just like bhagat singh.  these are also 2007 coins.  if they dont come out by 2014 end you can be sure they are one mint issue.

Received my Proof and UNC Sets.
The strike is great and beautiful ... expect ... well

In the Proof Silver Coin, the M mint mark has missing right leg of M and looks more like V ... it dosn't look like a die clog as typically it would leave a small mark under magnification ... i guess the punch used to put the M on the working die did not do the job well ... anyone else with similar issue? [If not I can list mine as EXTREMELY RARE and make some money  ;D ;D ;D]

Got my sets today... Absolutely fantastic strike quality for both proof and unc. no blemishes whatsoever. Packing also improved. Comparing to the vivekananda sets, Calcutta mint strike quality is utter crap.

What about the M mark ... mine is partial die clog ... check the image in previous reply
