Title: 1998 Russian 2 Rouble question
Post by: Prosit on August 03, 2010, 02:29:09 AM
What is the significance of this...if any.  Look at the mark under the eagle claw to the right.
They are different.  Is that different mints?

I think the left one is from Moscow mint (MMД) and the right one is from Saint-Petersburg mint (ЛМД).

Does the Л mean that the the Saint Petersburg Mint was still called the Leningrad Mint at that time?

No, LMD is the former Leningrad moneti dvor (Leningrad Mint)

It's now known as SPMD - Sankt Petersburg Moneti Dvor. I'm sorry if my spelling isn't right but you get the rough idea.

The switch was made over in 1996 if I am not mistaken.

Actually I don't.  One is bigger than the other and looked closer to the claw than the other so I put on my glasses and looked again.  That didn't help so I got a magnifier and looked again.  That didn't help so I got down my microscope and I could see they were slightly different  ;D  I didn't know if maybe it was a privy mark or a mint mark and my catalog isn't that new.
