Of the versions shown, I like the one dated 2016 best. It's similar to the one dated 2004.

However, on the version dated 2004, the legend is situated too close to the centre. It does not sit centrally on the outer rim.

The text on the 2001 version is perhaps a little too large.

The placement of the text on the 1988 version is neater than on the 2001 version.

I do not like the portrait on the 2018 version. There is too much text, and I prefer the plain English text of the other versions to this Latin version with abbreviations.

Which of the versions do you like, and why?

It is also interesting to note the different widths of the outer rim, but here I have no preference. It's nice to see such variations.

Given the popularity of the heptagonal 50 pence for circulating commemoratives and 'collector only' coins, I wonder how long it will be before the mints decide to produce high-price commemorative and collector 20 pence coins?

When the UK government decided to produce different annual round pound designs for each of the four nations of the UK, it also briefly considered doing the same with the 20 pence coins.

Gibraltar: obverse sides of the circulation 20 pence coins.

You might imagine that the various 50 pence obverses (seen below) would be similar to those of the 20 pence, yet the position of the year seems to move around more.

Again, my favourite here is the 'Queen of Gibraltar' 50 pence version. It has an elegant portrait, the text looks much cleaner in its placement, and the year appears in the exergue, which is the best place for it.

As with Isle of Man in 98/99 the legends were swapped on the 20p in 2011/12.

Yes, from 'GIBRALTAR' to 'QUEEN of GIBRALTAR'. I haven't shown the start year of each type. I've just shown all the different types, with random years.
