Title: New Commemorative Issue 2020: 75 Years of Food & Agriculture Organization
Post by: betterphilately.com on September 20, 2020, 04:34:48 AM
Yet another surprise coin subject from the Indian government. A commemorative coin will be issued on 75 years of FAO - Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The coin will be of Rupees 75 denomination.

Coin design will show a lotus in full bloom floating on water in the centre, with ears of cereal on either side. The rising sun cut by the upper periphery shall appear above the lotus. The inscription “FAO” in English is encircled on sketch of sun. A year “2020” in international numeral shall be flanked below the picture of lotus on the coin. On bottom periphery of the coin the inscription “सही पोषण देश रोशन” in Devnagri script will be depicted.

Will the coin be issued on 16 October on World Food Day?

United Nations will also be celebrating its 75th anniversary this year in October. Will a coin be issued on the UN as well?

This appears to be a part of international programme and hence the approved design may not carry Rupee symbol.

It looks like Indian mints are now adopting the European mints' business model - much increased attention on surcharged collector coins and no or very few circulating base metal commemorative coins. With reduced demand for coins due to number of reasons, it makes no sense to strike heaps of coins which nobody wants.

Not just packaging and the price tag, they should emulate the quality of European mints as well. :D

Fun fact: The coin depicts symbols of two political parties in India - Rising Sun (DMK, a Southern Political Party) and Lotus (BJP, current ruling party). :D
