Title: Balkh 1225 AH
Post by: andyg on June 17, 2020, 10:22:59 PM
This I think is from Balkh,  but not a type I can find illustrated.
Dated 1225.

Difficult to interpret. The first picture may show two scimitars, forming a U, upside down, overstruck with a type with lettering, showing at the bottom.

I think the second picture shows an overstrike with the same type, turned 90° of two scimitars, forming a U. I can distinguish no text.

If so, this coin was originally struck with obverse and reverse dies of the same type. The error was noticed and the coin was quite sloppily overstruck with the correct dies.

a keen eye can decipher the word "falus" written with an ornamental sophisticated calligraphy around the mintname  ;)
the other face shows a floral design between  2 scimitars (may be ?) with a star on the sword hilt.
a new type of Balkh civic copper  :applause:

Number of afghan copper coins haven't been carefully struck, however some of them posted on WoC (thanks to these members  :) ) have a remarkable stylised calligraphy; among them :

- the present coin of Balkh (sketch joined)
- a coin (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,40674.msg257490.html#msg257490) of Mahmud Shah from Kashmir
- a falus (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,20192.0.html) of Kabul ("aqibat al-khair")
- a small falus (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,46841.msg293275.html#msg293275) of Qandahar with a peacock
