Old series had 10 Piso as bimetallic coin.
New series has done away with that.

I expect the 20 Piso as bimetallic since they can not let go the bimetallic blank making equipment go waste.
Perhaps both core and ring will become plated steel.

It seems the new 20-piso coin won't come alone, the news also speaks a new version of the 5-piso coin to be issued in December, it seems that it will be scalloped or spanish flower in shape. Fingers crossed for a bimetallic P20 coin.

So we have an inner scallop for the 5 piso coin.

Was the nine-sided 5 piso ever issued?

See the issued 5 piso in the centre of the image.

Just like the new 1 pound coin, the new 5 piso coin too looks round, though it is not.

True. The initial artwork that previewed the design showed much sharper edges.

Correct, but the image of the 5 piso coin with the sharper edges was made with photoshop by some local journalist based on the Central Bank of the Philippines' statement that the new 5 piso coin would be 9-sided.

The image was not official.

Never.
Philippines has always been a conservative coin design issuing nation.
Only non circular coin issued was 2 Piso, a ten-sided coin between 1983 and 1990, followed by commemorative ones in 1991 and 1992.

They have just exaggerated the sharpness of the edges a bit to show that it is a 9-sided coin. It is only a graphic design. No need to be confused.
