Title: Mexico, un octavo. 1842
Post by: mkm1968 on January 01, 2019, 06:05:12 AM
Happy New Year! Please help with the classification of the coins. Mexico, Un octavo 1842, 11.50 gr 27.45 mm. That's the kind of legend I can't find.

Thatīs clearly a cast imitation.

Maybe contemporary, maybe a private token issue.

Thank you for your attention to the topic. A few years ago I saw a similar coin at one of the auctions, the same poor quality. Unfortunately, the link is not saved. There it was stated that the coin is rare and no references to catalogs or sources. And since then I have been tormented in search of the source with the definition of this coin.                                            With respect Constantine.

The reference for these pieces is Frank W. Grove Tokens of Mexico (https://books.google.com/books/about/Tokens_of_Mexico.html?id=eVYWAQAAIAAJ&redir_esc=y). ASIN: B00071T70G. Hard to find and expensive when found. Like many other tokens, Mexican tokens are almost all hard to find. That doesn't make them expensive, since demand is small.

This is not in Grove.    It is a very rough imitation of the Mexican national copper coins.   It could have circulated as a token, being a generous piece of copper for an octavo.
