Title: Christopher Columbus on coins
Post by: <k> on September 07, 2018, 06:10:49 AM
In previous topics I have looked at coins portraying world icons such as Princess Diana and Pope John Paul II. Today it's the turn of Christopher Columbus. In fact, I have it on good authority that Mr Columbus is currently dating Princess Diana in the spirit world! Naughty Diana is also seeing Jimi Hendrix on the side, but Mr Columbus refuses to believe it and won't hear a word against her.

From Wikipedia:

Christopher Columbus (1451 – 1506), known as Cristóbal Colón in Spanish, was an Italian explorer, navigator, and colonist who completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean under the auspices of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain. He led the first European expeditions to the Caribbean, Central America, and South America, initiating the permanent European colonization of the Americas.

Here he is with a beard now. What were the fashions in those days? Was Columbus a hipster or not?

Look at all those different faces. My theory is that somebody was travelling round the world, impersonating Columbus. People hadn't heard of false news in those days, and the camera still hadn't been invented.

From Jamaica in 1975, a $10 silver coin and a $100 gold coin. Because the gold coin was smaller, they used the same portrait as on the $10 coin but removed the ship. Unusual approach. Do you have any thoughts about that?
