Title: Morocco Falus ID Help
Post by: CameronK on August 30, 2018, 02:18:46 AM
Can someone offer an opinion here please? I see various descriptions of this coin in catalogs as either a 3 falus or 4 falus coin. It's 28mm across at its full diameter, and 9.5g in weight.

Thank you in advance for your opinions!

Don't know where you found a denomination 3 falus. The weight standard of those days are:

1 falus - 2.88 gram
2 falus - 5.77 gram
4 falus - 11.54 gram

Your coin is somewhat leprous, parts have fallen off, so 9.5 gram is acceptable for a 4 falus.

A 3 falus would theoretically have been something like 8.65 gram, had it existed. Whoever called it a 3 falus might have been confused by light weight imitations made to be worn on clothes. Or it could be a typo.

Incidentally, mint is Fes.

Thank you for the assist. My 3 Falus ID came from the Krause 19th Century Edition, 1801-1900, first edition (1996). But I saw 4 Falus elsewhere, so I appreciate the assist!
