Title: Princess Diana on coins
Post by: <k> on August 25, 2018, 06:28:38 AM
Diana, Princess of Wales (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diana,_Princess_of_Wales), was an icon of the 20th century. She died in 1997. Afterwards, many coins were minted in her honour. Their designs encompassed the good, the bad and the indifferent. Let's see how many we can post here.

I was curious to see just how many of these collector pieces there are. Well, I have posted a few dozen of them so far, and no doubt there are more still. Once upon a time the lady was a world icon; now it would seem she is a pariah, since nobody else apart from me has posted an image - not even the forum's lone alt-royalist. Go figure. Or could it simply be that so many of the designs are of such poor quality?

Many of these pieces were produced purely to cash in on her fame, for sure. But not all of them. For some people, the lady was indeed an icon. My sister bought the UK 1999 five pound coin, but she had never been interested in coins before or since. I own none of these pieces. I was most definitely not a fan. But then the lady was quite divisive, in that the country (my country, the UK) was almost split down the middle, between those who adored her and those who despised her - or so it seemed in the late 1990s. Her death rocked the monarchy, who did not at first know how to respond. Now all is peaceful again, and Diana's sons enjoy great popularity with many. They seem to have inherited her easy charm. Of course, the country is now split in other ways, as we saw after the Scottish referendum and the Brexit referendum. The monarchy ultimately is not greatly relevant. You may disagree if you wish.

Let's review some of the designs I have posted. They highlight different sides of the Princess.

Some designs show her wearing a tiara. The tiara highlights her royalty - she is not one of us - and also perhaps the glamour of the high life. She looked as a princess is supposed to look: beautiful. The design above shows her shyness and some of her vulnerability, that  persisted into the mid-1990s.

Not a great design, but look at how many of these designs include roses. In the days after her death, floral tributes galore - mostly roses - appeared outsides the gates of the royal palaces. One female journalist wrote how flowers were also associated with the Virgin Mary - not that Diana was either a virgin or divine, of course. The journalist noted that for many, Diana did in fact represent the Jungian archetype of "The Great Goddess" - or the young loving mother, an idealised characteristic that she shared with the Virgin Mary. I am not a religious person, but this observation seems to me to be quite acute, as regards Diana's myth - at least as her admirers saw her.

Diana died aged 36, at the same age as another icon: Marilyn Monroe. Singer Elton John famously provided his tribute to Marilyn Monroe, "Goodbye, Norman Jean", with new lyrics. Astutely incorporating the rose imagery, the song became "Goodbye, England's rose", and he performed the song at Diana's funeral service.

Like Marilyn Monroe, Diana could also be sexy, though in a very different way. However, her desire to be seen as "The Queen of People's Hearts", as she put it, and her wish to show solidarity with the suffering, meant that she was also seen to have a pious and serious side. Here that side of her is reflected in this portrait of her with Mother Theresa.

After her marriage broke up, she eventually became more mature, more sure of herself. She wanted to devote herself to serious humanitarian causes. Here she is seen campaigning against landmines. She was bewildered when some Conservative MPs complained that she was straying into politics. The weapons trade is very lucrative for some, of course.  :-X

Thank you for those comments. They give another dimension to a dry summing up of metallic portraits, many of which, as you noted, are pretty bad, designed to cash in.

There is no doubt that Diana was a complicated person, with many aspects, positive as well as negative, some of them contradictory. That's in the nature of being human. She was pretty, but all women of her age are, if they can avoid obesity. Sum it up, and you get a picture of a normal human.

Normal humans can be driven to despair. In Diana's case, the despair probably had many causes. One stands out for me. The constant hum of attention, of people noting every detail, of being judged every day. It wasn't their fault and it wasn't her fault. It was so easy to obtain and spread information as it was all available in English.

I met a pretty Danish princess once. Another perfectly normal human, turned extra careful, extra civil, nicely polite, with fine articulation. Her English was perfect. She was born English, or rather Scottish. However, she has weathered it all. Maybe some young ladies are better off not being a princess? But how do I tell my granddaughters that Disney got it completely wrong?
