Title: Dutch coffee machine tokens - please help complete the picture collection
Post by: Figleaf on August 04, 2018, 12:38:02 PM
For a long time, I have wanted to make a section on WoT on Dutch coffee machine tokens. What always stopped me is the size of the project. I estimate there are some 600+ different tokens. Obviously, I have some, but by far no 600+. Yet, the project is interesting. Now, I thought of a way to do it.

I would like to turn the creation project upside down: go for the pictures before making the tables. I intend to publish in this thread all coffee machine tokens listed in Catalogus van Nederlandse Betaal- en Reclamepenningen by A. J. Kooij, ISBN 9789070067267. Kooij lists coffee and cafetaria/canteen tokens together. I will take up only coffee tokens. I will include comparable tokens for hot chocolate, but not tokens for cold drinks vending machines.

I will make tables of around 100 tokens per post. The issuers are all in red letters. I invite or challenge you to post (conditionally) rights free* pictures of Dutch coffee tokens here. As I receive pictures, I will change the red letters to green - or orange if I hope someone has a better token or sharper picture.

As you go through your collection, I will set up an infrastructure in WoT. If there are sufficient pictures of the tokens of an issuer, I will add a page to the section. Please help construct yet another fantastic section on WoT. See the results of the joint efforts of our members starting here (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/wiki/Netherlands_coffee_machine_tokens).

I highly appreciate the help of our members malj1, jezuss as wel as the Holec historical society and Shell.

Peter

Thank you, malj1! It was very helpful that you remembered to add the diameters. Here are the Kooij numbers. Your tokens are identified by the Epa number below each illustration:

14871 = 405A          14879 = 118.2b
14872 = 110.2         14891 = 116A.1
14875 = 110.2var    14880 = Italian
14921 = 026A.2       14882 = German
14877 = 026.6         14936 = German
14878 = 026.1         14937 = German
14881 = 024.3         14884 = 313.3
14885 = 313.1         14883 = ?
14921 = ?

14886 = 277.1         14890 = 338.2 (I assume 11.5 is a typo for 22.5)
14887 = 277.2
14888 = 336.2         14893 = German
14889 = 336.1         14894 = 071.1
I suspect the tokens not in Kooij are not Dutch. The Van Nelle tokens are either in Cu-Ni (I suspect yours are) or in copper-nickel clad copper. The Maas token is either brass (2) or brass clad zinc (4). Check the edge for a sandwich of colours and let me know, please. Weights may be different also, but I have no weight data.

Yes, I will post my tokens, but the lists come first.

Excellent! We are getting somewhere quickly. May you inspire others.

Here are the Kooij numbers for your latest contributions:

14925 = 026.10          14933 = 413
14927 = 143.1            14934 = German
14928 = 143.4            14935 = not Dutch
14929 = 147.1a          14938 = Monegask
14932 = ?                   14939 = Monegask
14931 = ?                   14940 = 051.2

The BAM tokens are puzzling. Coffee machine tokens should have been 22.5 mm. BAM does many projects in other countries. Kooij tries to list those too, but he may not have been aware of these or these tokens may be a new issue (yummie!)

The Steigler tokens may well be German. Will do some research later.

I think the Rowenta token is French and for clothes dryers or vacuum cleaners in a car wash.

Please remember, all ye members, that it is not necessary that the token is in your collection. Any rights free source is OK and so is any size of picture. I can handle larger sizes by email and I'd rather have a thumbnail than no picture. If you come across a picture while surfing the net, please think of this project. A diameter is much appreciated, but not always necessary.

The Spengler tokens are indeed German. The issuer was:

Spengler Automaten GmbH
John-Deere Strasse 30
76646 Bruchsal

They specialised in coffee vending machines. The company closed in 2015.

Steigler is also German. The issuer is:

Servomat Steigler Vertriebs- und Beratungs-GmbH
Robert-Bosch-Str. 3
89179 Beimerstetten

They make coffee vending machines, water coolers and food vending machines.

Kaffee partner is located in Osnabrück and another coffee vending machine maker.

The tokens with the Conti logo and crown were issued by Conti espresso machine, 1 avenue Albert II, Monaco.

I found no coffee vending machines on their site. Your tokens may have been used for advertising. According to their web site (https://www.conti-espresso.com), they are represented on trade shows in Paris and Bordeaux.

The two BAM tokens remain puzzling. There is a large Dutch construction company called BAM, but their logo is different from what is on your token. The diameter of your tokens would make them unfit for Dutch coffee vending machines.

The tables are ready now. Issuers in green means that an image was provided either by malj1 or by me. We are hoping for others to come in with illustrations.

I separated out tokens that were unlikely to be coffee vending machine tokens on various criteria, assuming that the builders of the machines determined the size of the slot and that there were few builders. The criteria for exclusion were:
I included an unlisted token that is clearly Dutch and a coffee token at the end of the last table. I am sure there will be more of those in due time.

The tables exist in Excel format, so you can use them as a data base. If you want a copy, please let me know.

To enable further research, I want to achieve two things. First, separate "diameter givers" from "diameter takers". Givers are machine builders and possibly importers. Distributors and canteen/cafetaria service companies are derived diameter givers, but I will lump them together with the builders. Takers are enterprises without the capacity or interest to be active in the coffee vending machine sector. A hospital or a department store would at best put its name or logo on a token, but it had no reason to change the diameter. This distinction has been achieved by putting an "x" in the column Mach. prod. when the issuer was a diameter giver. By definition, those issuers that have no x are diameter takers. Others can take these data and sharpen the definition of which tokens were used in coffee vending machines and which were used otherwise.

Second, I want to group together issues from companies operating under different names, including Dutch branch offices and merger and acquisition targets. This will be done in WoT, but I will start the operation by putting another column in the Excel data base where I can note common origins of issuers. I will leave it to others to use the data base for further research, but I have noted already that the issuers give an interesting picture of the Dutch economy in the approximate time 1950-2000.

An encouraging boost for the picture collection, mal. Thank you.

Two little anecdotes as a reward :) Philips Stadskanaal was the last production facility of Philips in the Netherlands. It closed mid 2006. Most production is now in Asia, in particular Taiwan. The Dutch offices do administration only.

The sunburst token was originally a part of a petroleum cooker. The part was mounted on an axis by piercing it with a square hole, that fitted on the end of an axis (and kept falling off :)) The wheel was used to control the size of the flames, as the axis movd the "fuse" (one to three in a cooker) up and down. The petroleum cookers went out of fashion as more houses were connected to the gas grid in the fifties, but my mother still had one for slow cooking. However, the wheels were of the right size to be used in some coffee machines, so they continued to be produced for that purpose, but were no longer holed.

Kooij explicitly mentions the 22 mm tokens as German.

I am having second thoughts about the consimilar Vendo tokens, having found out that the brand name is German and in view of the diameter. See this site (https://www.sandenvendo.it/de/).

This is one reason why I find these tokens so interesting. They give you instant insight in how an economy is running. In this case, Sanden is a classical example of the very flexible, mid-size, family-run highly successful German enterprises that are typical of and the backbone of the German economy. They run a simple, but complete product line, where know-how in one product feeds into the production of other products and quality comes first. The only other country that has this sort of enterprises in significant quantity is Taiwan. It's also highly successful. There's a lesson there, somewhere. ;)

The two Vendo tokens considered Dutch have a Dutch trading house name on the other side. They are probably importers.

That's 41.1a! The variant without the mint mark is 1b. Kooy says it's Thevenon's triangle. These are the only two 18.5 mm tokens, but Kooij says they are common. 41.2 is 22 mm. Bar-Matic vending machines were imported by Bouter, whose tokens are 22.5 mm. Mysterious.

The Dutch Autobar tokens have a logo. They were imported by Automatic Holland.

Created some introductory pages and an extensive page for market leader Douwe Egberts (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/wiki/Douwe_Egberts). We still need a large amount of pictures. The tokens are often offered for sale on the net. Remember that it doesn't have to be your token. All we need is a rights free picture.

A really great addition, malj1. The Smit family is legendary in Dutch economic history. Their story starts in 1695 with Jacques Luijdertszoon van Vreem, a Flemish protestant who escaped persecution and settled in Kinderdijk as a smith. His offspring took the family name Smit. One son became a shipbuilder. Successive generations built a number of shipyards and started a high seas tug and rescue service (Smit International) of global renown. In port cities all over the world, their ships were known by name and recognised on sight. For a good while, practically all of Kinderdijk's bread winners were Smit employees. The token was meant for one of the shipyards.

I started this project on the understanding that I can't do it alone. Here is a very specific example. I have just finished the page on FAEMA (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/wiki/FAEMA). Kooij distinguishes three variants of the token pictured below: broad edge (0.8 mm), thin edge (0.3 mm) and "mirror image". The first two are not clear from the single picture. The third is quite unclear. Since the price is low, it is not brockage or a wrong die. It might be en relief, since it is normally incuse, but that's just a guess. Do you have these tokens or pictures showing the difference?

Give malj1 and me a hand, please. Think of this project when you are surfing for coins.

Anonymous steel 22.1mm

Identified as Italian. See the BO S.A. Bergamo (https://www.allnumis.com/tokens-catalog/italy/distributing-machine) token and the anonymous token lower down.

Not likely, Malcolm. That would have been some kind of error (not sure how such an error would have come about). It would have been discovered sooner, rather than later and error pieces still with the minter or FAEMA would have been returned to the melting oven. However, Kooij prices both "normal" and "mirror image" tokens the same, indicating that both are easy to find, so both variants must have been acceptable to FAEMA.

I searched Faema on Google images and became quite bewildered with the varieties  and suggested locations

Numista and Colnect suggest from Italy while catawiki prefers Belgium.

One I found does suggest Italy with a Faema type reverse. ...first image and most are from Numista]

Here is the next puzzle. Schoonhoven is a megalopolis of such a size that if you sneeze while driving through, you may have missed it. I can imagine a workshop there doing maintenance and repairs on coffee vending machines and selling tokens for those machines on the side, but two of them? Without a shoot-out at the OK corral? Or could De Vos (a family name) be a demanding client who wants his own shiny version of Solomatic's token? It seems unlikely, as the white metal tokens generally precede the brass ones. So, is it "what's in a name?" and De Vos is the same company as Solomatic?

Both well-known companies of my younger days. SH is of course Stork Hengelo. The coffee tokens section grows well, even as I am getting closer to the end of the capacity of malj1 and myself to provide pictures.

Please help us find pictures!

Describing the issuers has become a mini-study in the Dutch economy. I find it fascinating. Do you remember Fokker (no, not the film, the company ;)) but forgot where it came from or where it went? Read all about it here (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/wiki/Fokker). Are you Dutch and do you wonder why you don't see the once ubiquitous Van Gend en Loos trucks in traffic any more? Check out what they are called today and why here (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/wiki/Van_Gend_en_Loos_logo). What unites these companies? Coffee machines!

@malj1 if your picture is better than mine, by all means replace it.

The inverted Maas token blows my mind. See the discussion on FAEMA upthread. However, I am sure Maas used a Dutch token producer and pretty sure FAEMA didn't. How could this have happened?

Interesting theory. It requires that nobody noticed the problem on any of the intermediate dies and on the finished product. Maybe the producers take short cuts for short runs?

faema 24.1mm brass

The phone number (if that's what it is) is not in the Netherlands and the diameter does not match with a producer, importer or distributor. This diameter was used, but in the past, while FAEMA's tokens are more recent. Compare Kooij KB 19, 381, 414 and 466. Since FAEMA is a multi-national, this token is quite likely to have been intended for another country.

Farmer Joost Koppens had a problem. He was 58 and pensions hadn't been invented yet. His pension was his eldest son, Leo, who would succeed him and take care of him and his wife until they died. He had sent Leo to evening agricultural school and now he had received Leo's first report card by mail. Leo had done really well, except that the report card was from the wrong school! It came from a technical evening school. Joost was fuming.

His wife, Lucia, saved the day for Leo. She calmed down her husband, who agreed that Leo could continue his technical training on the condition that their second son would drop out of school and become his successor.

Soon after, Leo was in prison...

Read the rest of the story here (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/wiki/Koppens_Automatic). Amazing, what you can learn from coffee vending machine tokens.

I would rather call it an excessive remedy. I wonder how that Danish machine worked. If it didn't care too much about the diameter, it would invite people to use cheap foreign coins. A loss for the boss. There is a reason quite a few tokens were produced at the Utrecht mint and its neither weight requirements nor price ;)

I propose we make a note that diameter varies between 22.6 and 22.8.

It feels like a difficult birth, but it is done! On my last trip to the Netherlands, I met with a (passive) WoC member, who sold me a batch of around 100 tokens, about 80% coffee machine tokens. I researched all the issuers, got permissions for a large number of pictures and set up dozens of new pages.

It finally occurred to me why I put all this effort in this project. It is an economic history of my life, without any boring family pictures. It explains where some of the best known brand names of my years of innocence came from and how most of them disappeared. I discovered new stories, heroes and villains. There's a doctor who got tortured (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/wiki/GG_en_GD) and a wildly corrupt taxi boss (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/wiki/AAAC) to add to the already considerable cast of the coffee machine tokens show. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.

Meanwhile, the picture collection stands at just over 50% only. Please continue to donate pictures. A big thank you for past donors, including WoC members and a number of Dutch historical societies.

Convincing evidence and it makes perfect sense. Selecta is housed in the building that was used before by Pelican Rouge and Automatic Holland (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/wiki/Automatic_Holland). This probably means that there are still coffee machine tokens being used. Amazing.

Unusual diameter, though.

That's unfair :) Seriously, I trust the people at Selecta. They are likely to have a data base and a search would have turned up three tokens if there had been three. Selecta is an international company, so logically, they would have other size tokens for other countries. Rather, ther question is now which of the two tokens you have is Dutch. I gave them the diameter but got no confirmation and you can't expect the Selecta people even to see the difference, apart from size.

My guess is that we'll have to wait until a coffee token turns up and work from there.

I hadn't noticed until I saw an enlarged picture. A somewhat clumsy heart shape and a capital L as I learned to write it in school decades ago are decorating the reverse of this coffee machine token. Filtrum (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/wiki/Filtrum) sold these tokens to buyers of their vending machines, so we don't know anything about the person who expressed his love for L on a coffee token. However, I like to think it was a lonely factory hand, who in the end managed to marry the boss's secretary ;)

Next month, it will be a year ago since I opened this thread. Having just added a whopping 150 pictures to the already sizeable collection, I think we can now claim that the best online catalogue of Dutch coffee machine tokens is on WoT. Sure, we still have around 100 pages to go and even some of the existing pages are still a bit bare, but a rough estimate yielded that we already have around 75% of the pictures and 80% of the pages now. Moreover, many pages give much detail about the issuer, its founders, its business, and in quite a few instances a picture of where the token was used.

I have had a lot of help from our members, from John Kooij's catalogue of Dutch metallic tokens and the indefatigable malj1 to advanced Dutch token collectors, who came up with pictures and unpublished variants, types and even issuers. They are making this catalogue a product of teamwork.

In celebration of this coming of age, I have removed the general "under construction" warning and replaced it by two symbols in the lists of Producers, distributors and importers (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/wiki/Producers,_distributors_and_importers), Government organisations and enterprises (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/wiki/Government_organisations_and_enterprises) and Other institutions (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/wiki/Other_institutions). The list of Other enterprises (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/wiki/Other_enterprises) will follow soon. One - men at work - marks pages where there is no introduction yet. The other - watch the birdie - indicates pages completely devoid of pictures of tokens. My ambition is to remove them one by one, i.e. to have a page with information on each issuer, a place for all tokens and at least one picture on the main page of each issuer. I'll need more help, especially with pictures, to do that.

You are right about the lists in this thread, but looking at what I already know awaits me, it is unlikely that I can update them this year. I would welcome a volunteer to do it. It's not difficult, just time consuming.

Most excellent, jezuss. Thank you! May more people have illustrations to contribute for this project. It's looking so good already! However, as collectors, you will understand my wish to "complete" it.

I finished making pages for all the (semi) governmental institutions. I am now down to less than 100 pages to make for enterprises (ex-vending machine sellers, producers and importers.) Things have slowed down lately as I have a need to complete the pages for Asian telephone tokens first.
