Post by: DarkSithLord on March 23, 2017, 07:40:30 PM
Hi gents.

I recently acquired two of these. I will upload images of them later but I was just wondering if anybody had come across these before and what their approximately market value may be?

SOUTH AFRICA / AFRIKA POST OFFICE TEA CLUB

Material: Brass Size: 23,5 mm
Catalog: Herns Handbook on S.African Tokens No. 444

Thank you very much for any assistance. It is much appreciated.

Please find attached images as promised.

Anyone know the history of these? What was the post office tea club?

There is also an aluminium token using the same dies. Hern 444c see below.

Theron 26a brass 26b aluminium.

He says:
In Africans Notes and News June 1969, P. 244 -5 is a long letter from the Post Office, Publicity Branch, Pretoria in which 1924 is suggested as a possible date of issue. It is said that these pieces were made by the S.A. Mint. Pretoria. The tokens were discontinued in 1946.
Usually 12 totens were sold for a shilling but when the financial position was favourable up to 15 could be bought for a shilling. For each token a cup of tea or coffee could be obtained.

Nice tokens!  :D

As the number of collectors of African tokens is small, there are no market prices. The same token can fetch 1 $ at one day and one month later 50 $, if there are by accident two collectors with deep pockets missing this piece and finding your offer. These tokens are not common, so I would bid 10 to 20 $, if I would find them at Ebay.
