In 2017, Luxembourg is going to issue a 2 euro commemorative coin for the 200th anniversary of the birth of Grand Duke William III. The coin will depict a large portrait of Grand Duke William III facing 3/4 left and a small portrait of Grand Duke Henri facing 3/4 left.

William III was not only Grand Duke of Luxembourg but also King of the Netherlands so it is possible that the Netherlands will also issue a coin for this occasion.

Larger image of the design now added to the first post.

Thanks! In this case the added portrait of the current grand duke makes some sense at least. :)

Only 300,000 coins will be minted, just like the first €2 commemorative of 2017. Just received an 'offer' to buy it 'only' for €5.50... ::)

This must be the first commemorative ever for Willem III, who doubled as king of the Netherlands. He was a highly unpleasant person whose foreign policy initiatives (one of them was trying to sell Luxembourg to the German empire) were dangerous and de-stabilising. He was a living advertisement for a return to a Dutch republic.

Now you can buy rolls of the commemorative €2 coins (minted in Utrecht) which are a little less expensive per piece: One roll of 25 coins costs 58 euro. The central bank (43 avenue Monterey) will start selling them at 10.30 h on Thursday, but you can also order them online. Image: BCL.
