A bit busy for my taste, but a worthy issue for a commemorative.

On that occasion (60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights) four euro countries issued commemorative coins - Belgium, Finland, Italy and Portugal. In my opinion, this is the best design. The Finnish 2 one looks neat too but the words "Human Rights" are somewhat hard to read ...

And the Italian coin is the only one issued at the exact date of the anniversary, December 10.
In my opinion, this is the best design.
If my opinion counts, it even is the best design by far of all 2 commemoratives 2008.

Welcome aboard!

I won't be getting this coin,as it isn't in my area of numismatic interest. If it had been from Cyprus,Ireland,or Malta,I would have definitely got one.

@Tomerino: About the same here. Well, I do not collect the euro coins per year, but I do want to have every type of the circulation pieces and the commemorative 2 coins. Next month will be a busy one, with all those Euro/EMU "jubilee" coins.

@a3v1: Yes, I think so too. In general I prefer, for modern coins, a design that is not too busy. This one looks great; the designer Maria Carmela Colaneri created many coins from Italy (and SM and VA) including the Italian 2005 Constitution coin. But it's funny - one of the first sources (http://www.mebnet.helloweb.eu/maria_carmela_colaneri.htm) that you come across when searching for her name says: "Le sue monete si distinguono dalle altre per il fatto che a lei piace mettere in moneta il maggior numero possibile di elementi, anche se talvolta le capita di esagerare." Sounds like Figleaf's comment, hehe. Well, I think that she did a good job here ...

Le sue monete si distinguono dalle altre per il fatto che a lei piace mettere in moneta il maggior numero possibile di elementi, anche se talvolta le capita di esagerare.

Her coins distinguish themselves from others by the fact that she puts the largest possible number of elements on the coin, to the point of exaggeration.

Indeed, I'd find it easy to agree with that sentiment. Simplicity is not easy to achieve at all, but I think it works better, because human minds are excellent in filling out details, so that there's more room for personal interpretation.

That is an amazing design! I have got the commemorative from Portugal (Declaration of Human Rights) (Thanks,Peter!)
BTW, what is the mintage of this issue?

what is the mintage of this issue?

2.5 million according to the Gazzetta Ufficiale (Italian government bulletin). Some EU sources, such as the ECB, say 5 million - but that is the total face value AFAIK, not the total mintage.

I liked the Portugal variety too-but this one is better..
BTW,This (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2_commemorative_coins) wikipedia article gives images and related information of all Euro commemoratives issued till date. Here, the mintage of Italian issue is given to be 5 Million. But I would believe in 2.5Million..
And When I look at this list-I realize that I still miss many commemoratives :( :'(

Such "abstract" themes are usually difficult for coins. How can a designer visualize human rights or the anniversary of a constitution? I still think that, of the four 2 coins issued to commemorate the Declaration of Human Rights, this one is the best design. Portugal is interesting (the 30 sheets below the country name are supposed to represent the 30 articles of the Declaration) but not as good ...

As for the Wikipedia list, well, there are a few minor mistakes. For example, the date of issue of the Italian "Human Rights" coin was 10 December (which was actually the 60th anniversary of the declaration). Now how many pieces were minted, I still trust the government bulletin more :) which talks about "un contingente in valore nominale di Euro 5.000.000, pari a 2.500.000 pezzi". That is, a total face value of 5,000,000 equalling 2,500,000 pieces.

And by the way, I don't think that the German 2 "Lower Saxony" coin will show St. Andrew's in Hildesheim. This was just a temporary error in the Bundesbank's list http://www.bundesbank.de/download/bargeld/pdf/praegeinfo_muenzen2euro.pdf which was fixed about a year ago.

Right, the list of 2 commems issued so far is quite comprehensive. May not be that bad after all that the number of issues (apart from special common issues) is limited to one per country and year. And if you focus on the European Union member states (leaving Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican out), such a collection is still affordable ...

Anyhow,I am not at all looking for the Euro coins of Vatican,Monaco and San Marino. There are 2 reasons-They are not at all available here (Except a few 1 and 2 Euro fakes, but how worth it is to strike a bimetallic fake? ???), and the other is that they are not a part of European Union.
I am even not collecting EuroCent coins as such-my main focus is on 1 and 2 Euro coins-both general and commemorative issues.

The most expensive 2 commem that I know of is Monaco's "Grace" coin. Roughly 600 to 700 euro the days ... for one piece. That's just crazy in my opinion. So yes, it makes a lot of sense to basically ignore such issues.

As for the cent coins, well, of course I collect them. ;) By design, that is, not by year. But if I did not live here, I would probably not be that interested in them either ...

Strictly speaking,I do not have enough patience to collect even the 1 and 2 Euro coins by year 8),but I do collect them by type (mint mark etc).I can't even think of collecting EuroCents by year (or even by type)-really a tedious job :-[ The most difficult Euro coins to get for me are the German Euro coins..5 different mint marks-But I am quite sure that I will complete my German Euro collection some day :)
