Title: 1903 Half Tanga, Portuguese India, KM#16
Post by: PeaceBD on December 31, 2013, 04:58:06 PM
1903 Half Tanga, Portuguese India, KM#16. I just love the size of theses large half tangas.
Obv: Carlos I Rei De Portugal ( Carlos I King of Portugal) MCMIII (1903). Head of Carlos I facing right.
Rev: India Portugueza with crowned shield

The specimen below shows beautiful chocolate brown surfaces with hints of red in the protected areas. The coins shows no visible hits on its surfaces. I have been trying to find one of these in this state of preservation for atleast  2 years now. In my experience these are very hard to uncirculated grade as most show some rub on the kings head.  I was glad I was able to get this one when it was offered. Let me know what you guys think and share pics if you have one.

Thanks

Very nice piece.  I am a big fan of the Portuguese India pieces and pick them up whenever I can find a nice piece.  I don't have the 1903 Tanga but have multiple 1901s - probably my best is XF.  My favorite Portuguese India pieces in my collection are an 1881 Goa ⅛ Rupia and 1806 Goa Rupia.  Congrats on getting this one.

Thanks a lot. Please do share pictures of your 181 1/8th rupee and 1806 Rupee. Portuguese India coinage can be very challenging and interesting at the same time especially the earlier crude coinage. I am still taking it easy with the earlier coinage as confirming authenticity of some of the crude coins can be very tricky as has been reported on WOC earlier.

Very nice Bhushan!  Portuguese India is one of my other favorites and I tend to grab them too.  Been concentrating on the earlier ones, but I just started going for the late 19th and early 20th century coins as well...

Thanks Ram. Portuguese India IMO is a very overlooked section of Indian numismatics. Lots of interesting coins to collect.
