Title: Ireland 1990 1p - Error ?

My first thought with this was that someone had burned off half the copper plating - but I can't see how it could be done so neatly.  Acid maybe?

Has it sat in a puddle of something corrosive, part in and part out? Even something as everyday as Coke could do that if left long enough.
