I like it better than the portrait used on the official issues so far. The solution for low relief portraits is abstraction. However, the challenge remains to make a portrait recognisable. For the Beatrix portrait, the characteristic hairdo helped a lot.

My impression is that Willem is less into abstraction than his mother, while the Mint would probably like to come up with a break from the previous series. That makes a series in the same style as the previous one less likely.

While I like the somewhat abstract design, that would indeed be too close to Beatrix's portrait on the pre-euro coins and the 1/2 pieces. And then ... while I understand that we can be a little more playful here :) on actual euro and cent coins, the stars need to be arranged as they are on the flag.

Very recognisable portrait, Frizio. I think WA would appreciate it also.

Yes, I like that portrait too. The lion I would leave out (an actual coin would have the mintmark and the mintmaster's sign as additional elements anyway), but "WA" looks good. I also find that wide and bold font interesting ...

I like what you did with the writing, and not to criticise, but more to push (as the artist in me seems to demand) I think the head could be better. Not necessarily better sculpted, but something a little more BAM. Hard to explain as I'm not sure I could actually do it, but something perhaps a little different, that could be considered iconic, rather than just a head.

For example the 5 pound coin where the queen's head is just an outline. Not suggesting you do that, I know it wasn't that popular, but perhaps using some different techniques to liven up the image more.
