Title: December competition 2012!
Post by: andyg on December 20, 2012, 01:54:32 PM
Once again I've taken ten coins - with a theme - Can you work out what they are ?

For hints see the 2011 thread (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,12915.msg87796.html#msg87796), 2010 thread (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,8176.0.html) or the 2009 thread (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,5039.0.html)

Simply PM me your answers and I will post the amount you have correct, send as many PM's with answers as you like.  To win this year if you have 10 correct answers we will hold a draw, if no one has 10 then the 1st prize goes to whoever has most.

Last entry is 30th December 2012, after which I will post the prize (s) to the winner (s).

Please do not post answers in this thread.
Comments welcome!

1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes (selected from my spares tin) below -
1st prize gets to choose first.

There may be some change in criteria for prize from me (not yet finalized)..since the winner is already getting a nice coin from Andy, I think some other participant should be given my prize so that there are more than 3 winners. :) Will keep you updated...The aim is to get more people involved and enjoy the competition!

Too bad ... its a very tough one to crack for mortals like us ... i can make some sense of 2,8 and 7 ... the rest seem greak and Latin to me ... maybe Bimat can pull together a similar one based on Indian coins ... it will surely be a hit and I may stand a chance to get prices ...

BTW andyg you definitely need to disqualify some people for be more than qualified for such competition ;)

You do know the Republic India section has held not one, but two competitions this year right ?

We have three entrants - but no one with all ten guessed correctly.
#2 and #3 seem to be the most difficult.

You're certainly not the only one. I'm in as well. :D But I like both the concept of this competition and the way Andy put the "puzzle pieces" together so that they almost look like one coin.

I entered my answer. It was tough to discover the coins. It took me several days to find nr. 5 first, only to discover after some time my answer to nr. 5 was wrong. Yesterday I had only 6 coins discovered, but Christmas opened my eyes: I found 3 of the 4 missing this morning and I now hope my answer to the last one (which I found this evening) is also right...

I ahev participated in the competition and at first glance recognised 0 out of 10. Interest immediately stopped. Participation was active for at least 2 seconds. I do not deserve to be fined.

I'll add my name to the list of participants of the non-active variety, to avoid punishment - I recognised about two and got no further.  My ability to persevere is at something of a low ebb at the moment.

Results -

1 Canada 1 Dollar 1939 KM#38
2(Muscat and ) Oman 1 Saidi Rial  km #31/a
3 Liberia 1 Dollar KM# 32a
4 Liberia 1 Dollar KM#18
5 El Salvador 1 Peso KM#115
6 (Republic of) China 1 Dollar Y#329
7 Tonga 1 Pa’anga 1975 km#48
8 Iraq 1 Dinar km #various
9 New Zealand 1 Dollar Km#38
10 Guatemala 1 Peso (1894) KM# 210

#3 caused the most problems - it was a little sneaky I think using the same country twice.
There is also a shortage of countries beginning with "O"  :)

I had complete answers from Afrasi, Bart, Fosseway, Mackie and Spabreda
and partial answers from Paisepegal, Izotz and Bimat.

Now for the tricky bit - drawing three winners from the five names above - over to you Figleaf.
Title: Re: December competition 2012!
Post by: Figleaf on December 31, 2012, 02:01:57 AM
The way we have organized the drawing is that Bimat will randomly assign a number to each name. I will know the numbers, but not which number is connected with which name, but andyg will have a duplicate of the list of names and numbers, so no cheating is possible. I will put the numbers in random order and andyg and Bimat will translate the numbers to names. My first pick gets first prize, number two gets second prize. Bimat will take care of number three and I will make numbers four and five happy.

Special congratulations to Paisepegal, Izotz and Bimat for being good sports and participating with an incomplete series of answers.

I was in the right "neighbourhood" for a couple of them , but alas I could barely figure out around 5 of them if I hit it a bit harder :)

Special congratulations to mackie !! The guy has been only collecting a couple years now, but he stands shoulder to shoulder with the other winners; the usual suspects to have this comp in the bag  :)
Hope the judges give a special consideration for that !

And three cheers for Andyg!!!! , his comp made my Christmas week in office a little less boring   ;D

Thanks a ton, Ashwin. I must congratulate Andrew aka andyg for organizing such an addictive and unique competition. Initially, I had managed to identify only 2 coins and I wanted to call it a quit but Andrew encouraged me to keep going. Luckily, I got lot of time to sit and research as it was a weekend. I think I started late but managed to identify all coins roughly by 4 in the morning.

It was such a great learning experience. Superb fun!!

Special congratulations to Paisepegal, Izotz and Bimat for being good sports and participating with an incomplete series of answers.

Let me second, third and fourth that. Guess it would be best if everybody, including those who "found" only one or two, submitted their guesses. But ... heck, I don't do it that way either. Question: Would it make more sense if those who are interested in participating only got to know about the number of submissions, not about how many identified them all? Not a "vote", just a thought that crossed my temporarily frustrated mind. ;)

It was indeed a challenging competition. It took me several days to find the first one, which seemed afterwards a wrong guess (I thought the El Salvador peso was a coin from Uruguay, which made it very difficult to find the theme.)
Also, using twice the same country drove me mad! I already knew country nr. 3 had something to do with an L (the theme being "Collecting"), but I searched every country with an L to find the last coin, except Liberia, which was already used for nr. 4
Very, very clever!

Many, many thanks to Andrew to organise this competition!

I am already looking out to the competition next year! ;D

Yes, many thanks to Andrew!

I got the NZ, Iraq and second Liberia ones immediately, but Canada and the first Liberia one only after I'd figured out the theme. Also in my edition of KM the illustration of the first Liberia one is very poor, and on the Omani one the relevant bit of the reverse is hidden behind the obverse.

I first made a silly mistake with B & L (Belgium and Luxembourg :-[), but now I think I got it.

M. B. F. ET. H. REX. F. D. B. ET. L. D. S. R. I. A. T. ET. E.

Magnae Britanniae Franciae et Hiberniae Rex Fidei Defensor Brunsvigi et Luneburgi Dux Sancti Romani Imperii Archi Thesaurus et Elector (there may be mistakes in my Latin :-[)

The next problem is to seek for the English words:  ::)
King of Great Britain (upper arms), France (rigth arms) and Ireland (lower arms), Defender of Faith, Duke of Braunschweig and Lüneburg (left arms), Arch Treasurer and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire

Hope, I got it nearly correct!  :P
Title: Re: December competition 2012!
Post by: malj1 on January 12, 2013, 12:41:39 PM
...and there is no semée of hearts in the arms of Duke of Braunschweig and Lüneburg (left arms), Arch Treasurer and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire.

After many examples had been struck it was discovered a semée of hearts had been inadvertently left out of the arms of Brunswick in the Hanover shield; there should be hearts around the upright lion located to the right of and above the running horse. The die was then revised. The example shown here displays the original die without the hearts.

Hi, Aditya. Sorry I missed the contest. I'll get right on sending you and Andy coins!!!  ;D. You only want silver, right??? ;)  Been a little busy fighting the cruise lines for not telling us that Noro Virus was on board our ship. As a kidney transplant patient, this is risky, and we weren't told until we were in our cabin. Yup...I got it...and still recovering from a minor side effct or 2. It certainly was the heaviest prize. I still have monkey arms from carrying it. Now it's your baby. :D

Got home in one piece in spite of some near misses. Am still full of awe of four (!) salt trucks/snow scrapers on the road between Antwerp and Gent/Gand that managed to create unspeakable havoc, a 10 kilometre traffic jam and a confusion of almost political dimensions out of what was just a minor mess before they came along. ::)

I also want to show my prize: it is not that old as Afrasi's and not that heavy as SpaBreda's, but it still is a very special coin: the Ugandan 5 shilling of 1972 which was withdrawn soon after it came into circulation.

Together came 2 surprises : the Belfast and the Cardiff pound.
I am very, very grateful!

@Figleaf: what a strange idea to cross Belgium when snow has fallen! NEVER DO THAT AGAIN! You are punished with monster traffic jams. Yesterday it didn't snow, but between Brussels and Ghent (where my daughter is studying) we lost about an hour in traffic jams because of accidents: people not driving carefully on slippery highways...

I'm actually cursing myself for not answering all the ten questions right and most importantly, not coming fifth in the winners' list. >:D ;) :)

Bart's prize is awesome too, never heard of it! 8)

Don't worry, Bimat. There was no way to mail fifth prize. It took three people just to take it out of the car :D

Just been to get my prize from the post office -- and it was definitely worth staggering through the horizontal blizzard! Received the gems illustrated below from Bimat!  :)

Something that perplexes me: The Saint Alphonsa coin says it commemorates the centenary of her birth, but gives the dates 1910-2009. Er, what? That's the 99th anniversary -- or am I missing something?

Good to hear that! Little correction here: The real prize was the first two coins (Monaco and South Africa bimetals)...those Indian coins are from my junk box. :D I know that they are in not in best condition, blame Indian mints for that. ;) I wanted to add few more coins to the letter but I had very little time to search for the coins and pack them, so added whatever I could find. May be next time! :)

Strange indeed. Alphonsa was canonized (declared to be a saint) in 2008, and the 100th anniversary of her birth was in 2010. So maybe 2009 was a middle of the road approach. :)
