Title: Malta Constitutional History 2012-2013 Majority Representation / Self Government
Post by: chrisild on December 30, 2011, 11:37:47 PM
In 2012 and 2013 Malta will continue its "Constitutional History" series of commemorative €2 coins. Some more information is here: http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,8366.0.html

Seems the designs of the coins that have not been issued yet are now known (source: muenzen.eu). I have not found any info about these at the website of the central bank though. The theme of the 2012 coin is Majority Representation 1887, that of the 2013 coin will be Self Government 1921.

The design of this year's coin ("Majority Representation" 1887) has been modified. Apparently some people in Malta said that the first design - with the raised arms - suggested a nazi salute. Anyway, here is the new look of the piece.

I just read that 2012 issue ("Majority Representation" 1887) will come in two varieties: Coin in BU set will show Dutch mint's mint mark while loose unc coins will be without any mint mark. (Possible struck at Dutch mint only?)..

I have the 2012 set and the CC coin has this mintmark. Lets wait for coins from rolls and see if this coin will have this mark or not.

Issue of the second in the series of €2 commemorative coins

Published on Friday, 12, October, 2012 at 10:59

The Central Bank of Malta, on Monday, the 15th of October, will issue the second in the five-year series of €2 Commemorative coins highlighting milestones in Malta’s constitutional history.

Features of the coin The theme for the second coin is ‘Majority Representation – 1887.’ The coin reverse shows the €2 symbol which is a common feature of all euro coins of this denomination. The coin obverse (national side) was designed by the Maltese artist Ganni Bonnici and shows a jubilant crowd with the Governor’s Palace, in Valletta, in the background.

The coins were minted at the Royal Dutch Mint. They will be issued in circulation quality in rolls of 25 coins each, and a limited number will also be issued in proof quality.

Historical note As a result of the 1849 Constitution, Maltese citizens acquired the right to elect their own representatives on the Council of Government. However such elected members represented only a minority of the Council which was effectively controlled by the Governor, representing the British Government, and his nominated members.

Political developments in continental Europe leading to the election of representative governments, were instrumental in generating a similar sentiment in Malta. This process culminated with the passing of the 1887 Constitution whereby the Maltese were allowed to elect the majority of members on the Council of Government. Thus, for the first time the Maltese were given an opportunity to exercise the powers of government in local matters.

Distribution of coin The Bank will be contacting all those who have placed their orders to inform them of their allocation, the means of payment and the dates on which they can collect their coins. The coins will be available for collection from the Malta Coins Distribution Centre at the main building of the Central Bank of Malta.

For further information, the public is kindly requested to contact the Malta Coins Distribution Centre by an e-mail to mcdc@centralbankmalta.org or by calling (+356) 2550 6007/6013.

AFAIK, you can not get the Maltese roll for face value (similar to Luxembourg) as they also charge VAT on it so strictly speaking this is not a circulating commemorative. I yet have to hear occurrence of Maltese €2 commemorative coins in circulation so probably they don't issue them for circulation (through mixed rolls) at all. :(

Yeah, some people intentionally misunderstood the original design. Oh well, it got fixed ...
