The host coin is a piece of 60 Reis from Goa (Portuguese India). The countermark MR from 1765 makes it a coin of Mozambique under the reign of Dom José. This host coin is not catalogued in Gomes.
This identified piece of metal bearing a lot of historical facts.
This is how we hobbyist keep on learning from such coins every day.
May I know KM# no ?
Cheers ;D
Yes, this ugly and worn piece of history gives me more joy, than a packet of modern silver proof coins will do. :D
In my old KM this countermark is not listed with any coin. Perhaps it is in newer editions.
In the catalogue of Gomes it should be under Dom José between the numbers 19 and 20.
Here comes another one: 1 Onca or 6 Cruzados or 2.880 Reis bearing the date 1843.
The star shaped countermark over the M was done in 1851.

These counter marks are quite impressive , does any references available to study further regarding such counter marks.
Cheers ;D
My only source is the catalogue of Gomes, who remarks at this countermark: Edital da Junta da Fazenda de 8 de Novembro de 1851.
Top pieces, Afrasi. Very impressive. Got a lot of fun and a trip to Gomes out of them. Thanks.
Peter
Thanks! Here is another coin from Mozambique:
15 Reis 1725 struck at Ilha de Mocambique. (Gomes # J5 02.03)
Design is a copy of the Portuguese Goa coins.
Reverse reads something like:
o
II?
o
I = abbreviation of Joao
I? = 15 with a retrograde 5

I found that the two books on Indo-Portuguese coins are:
1. "Indo-Portuguese Money" by J. Ferraro Vaz. : reference book on coins and paper money .
2. "Moedas Portuguesas" by Alberto Gomes. This book covers all Portugal colonial series including India.
Cheers ;D
Yes, I have the book of Ferraro Vaz (Dinheiro Luso-Indiano) too in my library. But it doesn't contain the coinage of Mozambique. So I did not mention it here.
Your coin is not listed but Gomes 5th edition 2007 lists Meia Tanga stamped MR, Gomes 19.01
The Mozambique coins are listed in Livro das Moedas de Portugal by J.FerraroVaz/Javier Salgado 1987 (last edition).

Thank you for your comments!
Your catalogue is no more available at zvab, amazon or abebooks. Do you still have copies in stock?
Yes I do.
Yesterday the book arrived. Many thanks! The catalogue is in a positive way old-fashioned, as it has no photographs, but well-made drawings of the coins, which enables you to show things much clearer than the best photographs.
Alexander
Thanks for your message.Enjoy the book.
I knew Mr.Ferraro Vaz it was a great portuguese numismatist.
Best regards

Fortunately, this way of illustrating has not died out. Vanhoudt uses it for Belgian coins, Duplessy for French coins. I share your love of them. I wish someone would take the trouble of doing a computer application that would help making them.
