Title: Tunstall / Alvis Racer - The Wizard
Post by: redwine on August 29, 2013, 06:24:36 PM
I'm thinking mid 1920s.  Since a Fred Tunstall played for Sheffield Utd then and also captained Engerland. And The Wizard comic started in 1922.  I may well be wrong and look forward to being corrected.
Can find absolutely no trace on t'internet  :(
I'm hoping you can help.  Many thanks!  ;D

How Wizard!  ;D

I found this  Wizard site! (http://web.archive.org/web/20140828230840/http://kellyscomics.com/list-of-dc-thomson-freebies.php) this shows lot of freebies given away with comics, there are some coins listed but I did not find your particular one.

The Wizard was launched as a weekly British comic on 22nd September 1922, published by D.C. Thomson, It was merged with The Rover in September 1963, becoming Rover and Wizard, renamed to The Rover in August 1969. The Wizard was relaunched on 14th  February 1970, and continued until 10th  June 1978, by which time 1,970 issues had been produced.

This page shows some Wizard comics (http://web.archive.org/web/20140828231731/http://kellyscomics.com/wizard-old-comics.php)! too but seems the earliest in the collection dates to 1935; four pages of these in total. click images to enlarge.

Here is a typical Wizard comic picture. Note details of a free gift mentioned in mast-top most weeks.

this page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Tunstall) says full name Fred Tunstall but I doubt that, perhaps it was H. Frederick Tunstall?

listed as being at Sheffield United 1920–1931

Alan Lauder Morton (24 April 1893 – 12 December 1971) was a Scottish international footballer and "Wembley Wizard". He was known for his stirring wing play as an outside-left and commitment to Rangers. He retired from active play in 1933.

'The Wee Blue Devil', as he was nicknamed went onto receive winners' medals as Scottish Football League champion in 1921, 1923, 1924, 1925, 1927–31.

Dredged up from the recesses of my mind was the hazy memory of one of these, a search in my junk box confirmed this, a very poor specimen that I feel may benefit from a touch of soap and water; perhaps for the first time since he left the playing field in the 1920's!

One that has been shown before, Harry Chambers, Liverpool with makers initials JRG below bust of J. R. Gaunt & Son Ltd., of London and Birmingham [I see the others also have these initials]

The reverse has another racer this time a Lanchester. Presented with the Wizard. Aluminium, 23.5mm.

We now need details of the other reverses and how many other types were issued in this series.

We're missing "Coin George Wilson. Date: Oct 5 1923 NO108" from one of the links above.

1920–1925 Sheffield Wednesday. Twelve appearances for England, seven as captain.

I shall have to study that listing again! even now we only have seven.

George Wilson (14 January 1892 – 25 November 1961) was an English footballer who played in his club career at Blackpool and Sheffield Wednesday between 1912 and 1925. He made twelve appearances for England, seven as captain.

Sheffield Wednesday 1920–1925

I located his Flickr page, this adds Frank Roberts of Manchester City. In October 1922, Manchester City paid £3,400 for him (a huge sum at the time).

Manchester City 1922–1928 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Roberts_%28footballer%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Roberts_%28footballer%29)

His Flickr page has thumbnails for seven coins see below. No image there of George Wilson.

Redwine can you add link you found to dates of these footballers?

It's in date order. Go down to October 1923

Apparently a Peugeot Racer was on the back of Man City's Frank Roberts (source ebay - piccies gone  :'( )

Malcolm, can you ask the chap with the Flickr page what's on the other side of the pieces?

We can't be sure these are the same tokens as those dates refer to publication dates of Adventure comics - not Wizard.

Strangely when you click the Adventure2 tab this image comes up for two seconds before being replaced by later comics. These, I think, are all photos.

Hmmm, Adventure, "Coin R. Roxburgh."    Date: Oct 20 1923 NO110
Bit of a coincidence?
Just checked - adventure comic started with a different name in 1935.  Although that was a US comic.

Adventure comic - No.1236 came out on 24th JULY 1948.  So we're looking at the 1920's for the first issue assuming it was weekly.
So misled by wiki once more! ::)
Now confirmed Adventure comic was around - Adventure (1921–1961)

See the image above for issues 2 - 11 from 1921 ;D These do show for a brief moment before disappearing which is most odd, a glitch on the site?  ??? there are more, but they go as I scroll down.

Also you quote issue No.110 of Oct 20 1923 for "Coin R. Roxburgh."  these numbers would tie in well with your maths.  8)

What we know for sure, probably:

Harry. Chambers Liverpool / Lanchester Racer
Alan Morton Glasgow Rangers / ?
A.E Quantrill Preston North End / ?
A. Troup Everton / ?
Frank Roberts Manchester City / Peugeot Racer
Robert Roxburgh Newcastle United / ?
H. Tunstall Sheffield United / Alvis Racer

Adventure started September 17, 1921. Perhaps some of the gifts were available with other titles run by D C Thomson? ie Adventure.

After another determined search through my junk box I found a second piece which does confirm my suspicions that another series of these was issued from Adventure Comics.

D. STEELE HUDDERSFIELD TOWN initials JRG below, as before, for maker J R Gaunt & Son, but this time the reverse reads PRESENTED WITH ADVENTURE / WOLSELEY RACER

Aluminium, 23.5mm

David Morton Steele (29 June 1894 – 23 May 1964) was a Scottish professional footballer and manager. played for Huddersfield Town 1922–1929

I've been thinking why these pieces interest me so much.  And now I've figured it out! ::)
So, a slight aside while a fully indulge myself :P

The pieces bring in a number of different collectors.  Football within that teams and Racing cars within that marques.
Now what really excites me is were they displayed on a dual display card?  Because all the other pieces of this ilk tend to have a specific theme and not a lot on the other side or more info about the same.  And are displayable showing one face only.
Imagine if you had something like the Smurfs on one side and Asterix and his Gauls on the other of a petrol supplier set.  And one display card where you could see both sides and each side had descriptors for the pieces.  The chaos in the back of the car would be unbearable!  >:D
And then mix up the combinations for each side and hey ho your average collector would go bizarre!!  >:D >:D
And as for the third side!!! ::)
If it hasn't all ready been done, consider it copyright redwine  8)

You have piqued my interest in these too, I like the earlier tokens and the 1920's fit the bill well. I do have several of the modern football tokens that I do not want and these two earlier ones had been tossed with them into the junk box with hardly a glance. [just b football I thought] The racing cars make for an interesting theme as well, ...and then to cap it we have my kind of comics too!

Keep up the search!

In February/March 1930 six Secret Service medals were issued. These had a secret sign on one side and a code on the other. These were linked to a series of complete stories in The Wizard under the general title of Tiger MacTaggart. The editor also provided his readers with a competition which ran for those six weeks, giving them an opportunity to get involved and use the codes themselves.

Would be nice in a way to return to those simpler days. Thinking back on this, my father would have been fourteen at the time and I imagine this competition would have been right up his street. Only ten years later he was sent off to fight in WW2 ...after which time the world had changed for ever.  :(

"Free Gifts In The Big Five is a fascinating insight into a time long passed and...."  "past" would have been so much better!

Shortening "free gifts" to gifts would have been preferable also ;)

It reminds me of "your message was sent successfully". I am waiting for "your account was not deleted successfully. We will continue to send our spam. Har har har". Or "your message was not sent unsuccessfully." Or "we successfully sent our expensive gifts. Now pay up!"

O tempora, o mores.  ;) :D :D

In fairness to the author, this is how they were advertised on some of the comics.
But I get where you are coming from.

And I'm getting very impatient! ;)  Like a kiddie at Christmas  8)

Sadly I'll have to wait a little bit longer as it's in England waiting to be picked up.  :'(
And my family will get it back to me in January.  I'll be happily stuck in France on my own looking after the cats ;D
So, I'll have a week to catch up on all the promises I've made............... ;)

A big surprise to find there are only six medals to be had in each set of footballers, this tells me I am only missing a couple of pieces.

So from The Wizard set W5 I am missing ALAN MORTON. - 'The Wee Blue Devil'

And from the Adventure set A7 I am missing ROBERT ROXBURGH.

So there are quite a few of these yet to find it seems!

I guess they are pretty rare as most would have been discarded long ago.

Missed out on this one today, outbid! made GBP 11.40

The blurb said:

The Wizard links are now broken.

There is a new page here (http://www.britishcomics.20m.com/) but but doesn't link with anything much.

From 1930 part of a set of six SECRET SERVICE BADGES #,s 2; 4; 5; and 6 that were presented with The Wizard.

From Reply #49 (http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,23071.msg161573.html#msg161573)

From a set of six SECRET SIGNS issued 1929

# 3 TONG OF SING-POO presented with the Wizard and showing the footballer F. Cook on the reverse.

I hadn't quite realised what a large series of different pieces were issued.
