Uruguay 50 centésimos.

In 2008 Uruguay announced that it would issue a new circulation series

The reverse designs would depict wildlife:

50c - Southern Lapwing [Vanellus chilensis]; $1 - Armadillo ; $2 - Capybara; $5 - Rhea.

$10 - Cougar, also known as a puma or mountain lion.

In the event, the new series was not released until 2011.

However, on 1st July 2010 all existing (old series) 50 centésimos coins were withdrawn from circulation.

Coins of that denomination were then demonetised.

This was the result of high inflation.

The design depicting the Southern Lapwing therefore never reached production.
