Ah, that explains it ... Or maybe it was just good luck that I have hardly ever seen such pieces around here.

As for the EMU/euro jubilee coin, the piece from Luxembourg will have a lower mintage than the Treaty of Rome coin from LU: In 2007 they issued 2 million (raw) pieces, but there will be about 800,000 only this time. Guess they know the euro-stickman design won't be terribly popular. ;D

Pabitra Saha reports:

CBM to issue first €2 commemorative coin

The Central Bank of Malta (CBM) will be issuing its first €2 commemorative coin on January 5, 2009.

The coin commemorates the 10th anniversary of Economic and Monetary Union. Each euro area country will be issuing a similar coin bearing the same design but with the name of the country and the legend 'EMU 1999-2009' shown in the respective language. The Maltese euro coin will have the legend 'UEM 1999-2009', where the letters UEM stand for 'Unjoni Ekonomika u Monetarja'.

The deliberately primitive design of the coin symbolizes the euro as the latest step in the long history of trade up to the formation of economic and monetary union. It was created by George Stamatopoulos, a sculptor from the minting department at the Bank of Greece.

The coin will be available for sale in rolls of 25 coins each at a price of €57.75 per roll, inclusive of VAT. Purchases can be made from the counters of the Malta Coin Distribution Centre at the Central Bank of Malta, Pjazza Kastilja, Valletta, as from Monday. A number of coins will also be issued in normal circulation as from the same date.
An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

btw: This Maltese coin was struck by the Royal Dutch Mint (Utrecht - the Netherlands)

Yup, the two links look like identical twins. ;D What do I think about these designs? Pretty much what I have been thinking about the design that won the poll: Nice idea for an advertising campaign poster maybe, but on a coin ... Also, I do not think that the abbreviation "EMU" (or UEM or WWU etc.) has become so much more widely known during the months between the design contest and the date of issue.

However, I decided that as a loyal euro collector I must have all of those pieces. (Well, one per member state is enough.) Will be interesting to check the coins for subtle and maybe less subtle differences ...

(Edit) The comments above were from an earlier post that I wrote in December and somehow managed to delete. ;) Anyway, I just got the Luxembourg coin from that Euro/EMU series - and yes, this MultiView Minting looks better this time.

Unlike the regular 2€ coin of Malta, this Maltese 2009 EMU commemorative has an edge-inscription identical to that of Belgium, France, etc.

You will all be very pleased to know that both the Cypriot & Maltese E.M.U. 2 Euros will be added to my collection in just under a month's time,as my boss will be in London,Berlin,& Valkenburg (a.k.a. Maastracht Banknote Fair),plus Singapore on the way back home.

Yes,I will be getting another Irish E.M.U. 2 Euros to compare with the one that Lorenzo Caira sent me from Howth,County Dublin a few months ago.

Malta EMU is the hardest one to find from this series,I suppose..(might be due to relatively low mintage of 7,00,000)
