New 10 Rs: With New Rupee Symbol
« on: July 30, 2010, 02:38:31 PM »
Dear Friends

One of my friends has sent a scan of design of a futuristic looking 10 Rupee coin. It has the new symbol adopted by GOI. I dont know if design has been really approved by GOI or it is just a rumour.

It could be figment of someone's creative imagination(using photoshop).

However, the design looks elegant and simple. Since the words Rupees and Rupiya have been removed, it has created lot of space on reverse.

Lets wait and watch...

Have you noted "RED" centre instead of usual "YELLOW"?
I think it will make a nice change if the centre is made of copper, instead of brass.

I think it's creativity of some enthusiastic artist. In any case, the country name and the date will not be shown on both sides. And AFAIK,government hasn't said anything about the use of rupee symbol on coins, the minister said only banknotes will show the symbol(that too after a year or so) ::)

I think so too, that its someone's creativity - one of my co-workers showed me the same image two days ago (he had received the email as a forward from another friend)

With all due respect to the designer, this symbol has one stroke more than an R, so it's longer to write. It will not be found on keyboards for some time to come. I wonder if people will start using it...

I have seen Newspapers using this symbol in everyday news.

Since the GOI has finalized the symbol, there is no point to discuss the merits or otherwise as such. We are seeing this symbol on every channel of TV and in large number on newspapers. It will take time to familiarise this symbol in India and in the world. New keyboards are coming soon in the market as promised by the govt.Myself cannot write this symbol in this reply. However, the decision of the Govt to introduce the symbol on Rupees 10 coin is most welcome.

So is this official now? I saw this article ...
http://the-diplomat.com/indian-decade/2010/08/10/rupee-joins-the-big-league/
... but find it strange that there are no government statements (AFAIK) about the final decision.

Another problem is, will this rather be a logo or a character? For the euro symbol, for example, there are precise instructions on how to reproduce it for official use. Makes some sense (certainly in the initial phase), but of course it has since then been adapted to whatever the "characteristics" of a font are. Judging from these two "varieties" of the rupee character, I assume the rupee symbol will ultimately be used flexibly too, once it is part of many fonts ...

I am new to this site and first post here. Glad that I found this website having so much knowledge about Republic of India issues which is my interest.

Coming to the Rupee symbol on the Rs 10 coin, I think I read that this won't be used on coins and notes and so we would not see it in the near future. This was in the news items for the release. I am lazy and not double checking, and someone can. :-)

I have been told that the new symbol will be used only on banknotes but not on coins. In official press conference by government,Ms. Soni also mentioned 'banknotes' but not coins.
Now most of the news papers, advertisements etc are also using the new symbol instead of Rs.Very few times I see the use of Rs,that's a very good start, isn't it?  :)

BTW,welcome to the group, repindia! Good to see another Indian here ;D
