Trinidad and Tobago changes its coat of arms

Trinidad and Tobago is going to change its coat of arms. Currently it amongst other things contains 3 ships, representing the 3 vessels Columbus used to traverse the Atlantic, but these are considered to be "colonial vestiges". They will be replaced with a steel drum. Trinidad and Tobago depicts its coat of arms on its coins, so these will be amended at the next time of minting.

NEW coat of arms of Trinidad and Tobago.


The new coat of arms was recently released.

It was designed by Gillian Bishop.

It features the national instrument, the steelpan.


The three ships of Christopher Columbus have been removed.

These were regarded as "colonial vestiges".

The steelpan traces its roots back to Trinidad and Tobago.

It is the national instrument of that country.

It was invented in the 1930s and 1940s in the Hills of Laventille, in Port of Spain.
