It was never issued as a circulation coin.

The Republic of South Africa introduced a new coin series.

Jan van Zyl designed the springbok that appears on the 1 rand coin.

The 10 cents coin of the 1965 set featured an aloe, designed by Tommy Sasseen.

That design was used in place of Jan van Zyl's proposed springbok design.
