Uruguay: thematic circulation designs 1968 to 1970

Uruguay, 1 peso, 1968.


In 1968 Uruguay issued the start of a new design series. The obverse of the coins depicted their national hero José Artigas. The reverse featured the national flower, from the Erythrina crista-galli tree, commonly known as the ceibo in Spanish or the cockspur coral tree in English.

The national sun symbol replaced the portrait of José Artigas.

In 1970, two new denominations were added to the set: 20 and 50 pesos coins.


This time the coat of arms appeared on the obverse.

The reverse featured three ears of wheat.

Here we see presumably the original intention for 1968.

The set was finished in 1973 with a 100 pesos coin.

The reverse featured an olive branch.

No circulation coins were issued in 1974.

In 1975 the nuevo peso was introduced, because of inflation.

A new design series accompanied the new currency.
